Help to save 14-year-old Raghu

Name: Raghu
Age: 14 years
Disease: Wilson’s disease with portal hypertension
Needs: Liver Transplantation
Donor: Viji, Mother
Ask: $20,000 – please donate what you can, even if it is just a few dollars

My ex-neighbor from Chennai, India, Viji makes a humble living as a tailor to provide for her two sons. She is a single mother and she was married to her cousin. Consequently, her 14-year-old son Raghu has developed a genetic disorder called Wilson’s Disease with Portal Hypertension. Raghu’s liver is in worse shape than a full-time alcoholic adult’s liver, despite the fact that he is only a kid and has never touched alcohol!

Raghu needs a new liver immediately to save his life. His mother Viji has decided to donate part of her liver. Doctors at Miot International Hospital in Chennai are very interested in this beachhead liver transplantation. However the cost of the surgery is beyond Viji’s ability. She lives in a modest rental house and has no significant possessions of her own. Her income provides for the family’s daily needs and children’s education. As the donor, she will be hospitalized and disabled for a while, making it difficult to earn and offer ongoing financial support.

The government of Tamil Nadu is subsidizing the surgery. Viji needs to come up with additional $20,000 to pay for the surgery and ongoing caring costs after that. Any amount small or big that you donate goes a long way, particularly with the USD to INR exchange rates these days.  I have visited Viji and Raghu at Miot Hospital, seen their medical records and can attest to the truth of the situation.

Viji and Raghu need your help. Time is not in their favor and Chennai floods delayed Raghu’s diagnosis and cure and also driven up the total cost. Raghu is a very optimistic kid and is a source of strength to Viji. I have personally seen Viji from a very young age and I have seen her life take some major turns. She is a survivor. Lets help her to continue be a survivor!

P.S. Even if you are unable to donate, please share this with others - perhaps they can help!

Briefly about me: I am Priya Natarajan and I live and work in USA. I have known Viji and her family for the last 32 years.
