HELP SUPPORT PUERTO RICAN COFFEE FARMERS AFTER HURRICANE MARIA
Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico on September 20 as a Category 4 storm, taking with it almost 100% of Puerto Rico’s coffee crop. Coffee took some of the hardest hits as trees were stripped completely bare, even taking the bark off the trees.
Many farms are still cut off due to loss of communication, blocked roads, and scarce gasoline. These farmers need immediate, short-term aid for access to basic rights like food and water if they hope to rebuild and resow longterm.
Our coffee farmers spend all year caring for and investing in their crop, working hard to reap the benefits of a harvest that was just about to begin in October. And now they have lost everything. All the fruits of their labor have been wiped out in one fell swoop.

-Hurricane Maria is the biggest natural disaster in Puerto Rico's history
-Puerto Rico is 100% without electricity
-90% of coffee crops were lost
-It costs $1300 to farm just one acre of coffee
-Puerto Rico is one of the most expensive places in the world to farm coffee
-It will take up to 3 years to produce another viable coffee harvest
HOW TO HELP
100% of donations will go exclusively to immediate relief for the coffee farmers of Puerto Rico.
We will donate $500 per every farmed acre to local farmers as direct aid in the form of money. Our farmer’s need immediate relief and the most effective and fastest way to provide that is cashflow to help get them back on their feet and meet each individual farmer's different needs.
Our immediate disaster relief fund will provide funds for:
-Basic supplies like food, water, medicine
-Generators and fuel to power their homes and
machinery
-Seed costs
-Equipment costs
-Rebuilding homes and farms
WHY
Puerto Rican coffee is emblematic of our island and one one of the few products that defines us as a people and unites us as a community.
It took us over 10 years to recover from Hurricane Georges, and if we don't act now, there may be no more coffee in Puerto Rico in the years to come. If we don't provide immediate relief and assistance, many of our farmers will likely give up and abandon their farms and crops. We cannot abandon our land and our farmers need our help.

WHO
This fund will go directly to small-scale, independent farmers. These are single family coffee farmers, who work farms from 1/2 to 50 acres.
This fund has been organized and is managed by Mikol Hoffman for Cafe Cuatro Sombras , a specialty coffee brand from the mountains of Yauco. This initiative began as a way for us to directly help the 6 farmers who provide us with coffee and who have become our extended family. We soon realized that through our networks in and outside of Puerto Rico, we have the capability to impact not just those directly around us, but the entire coffee industry on the island.
We believe in honesty. All proceeds will go directly to local, small-scale coffee farmers.
We will survive. We will re-plant. But we need your help now.
