The diagnosis since 2020
Chanelle is a 34 year old wife and mother of 2 young children, in 2020 she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer after 12 months of being misdiagnosed with low iron, post-natal depression and hormone imbalance.
By August 2020, after months of fatigue when a short walk meant Chanelle couldn’t get out of bed for three days, she pushed Dr’s harder to see what was really wrong, she eventually had a colonoscopy and in October 2020, the colonoscopy showed a 9 x 10 x 8 cm tumour in her colon, a few weeks later further scans confirmed their worst nightmare – the cancer had spread to Chanelle’s liver and was Stage 4.
Due to the aggressive nature of the cancer she has, Chanelle underwent thirteen months of invasive chemotherapy, countless major surgeries and natural treatments. In July 2021, her body could not continue with chemo any longer. Scans revealed the spots on her liver had not reduced. In August 2021, they tried CyberKnife to get rid of the spots. In November 2021, scans revealed CyberKnife had destroyed the legions on her liver, and she was told she was in REMISSION! Only those who have faced cancer can truly understand what those words mean.
On 21 December 2021, four days before Christmas, subsequent scans showed the cancer had spread to her peritoneal cavity, her ovaries and all through her abdominal area.
In January 2022 the surgeon performed a laparoscopy and he told Chanelle and Graham he would be able to remove all the cancer and leave her with a ‘clean slate’. By now, Chanelle knew that doctors and surgeons are very reserved in their prognosis and as such, she really believed a clean bill of health was on its way. In February 2022 Chanelle went back into hospital for a peritonectomy and HIPEC. Chanelle woke after the 16-hour surgery to be told they were not able to remove all the cancer.
Next Steps
Additional scans showed the cancer is now in her lymph nodes, diaphragm, lungs and returned to the liver.
The surgeon told her she has 6-18 months to live. That was 3 months ago.
Chanelle has since found and has been accepted to undergo state of the art anti neopeptide treatment in Houston, USA which specialises in and has been shown to cure people with her cancer's rare genetic identity. This treatment costs upward of $150k, which is a small price to pay for a mum’s life, but a lot of money for a family who has been living off one compromised income for the last 3 years.
Fortunately, Chanelle's place at the clinic is available immediately and she needs to receive this treatment as soon as possible. The faster we can raise the funds the better!
