We have run a horse boarding facility in California for 25 years as a husband and wife team. We have been struggling for years but managed to get by. Recently we have suffered a devastating loss of clientele, crushing debt, and endless bills, as well as other financial issues out of our control. It has happened before, but this time around we have not been able to bounce back. My partner has disabling pain from spinal arthritis, likely caused by years of hard manual labor. This pain makes it incredibly hard, if not impossible, to get work done. We have lived and worked on this ranch 24/7, 365 days a year for the last 25 years. This ranch has been a part of our lives for so long, we don’t know what we would do without it.
For a few years now, the property has fallen into disrepair. It is not a one-person job, and I can only do so much. While one of us is down, it has taken its toll on not only the property, but on us as a couple. I have asked my two sons for help, but they can only do so much on a non-existent improvement budget. Not only our ranch but our family has been struggling to get by, even though we are all employed and working our hardest.
Due to this disrepair we have lost clients. What we need is a fighting chance to be competitive with other facilities in the area.
Our goal is to make much-needed improvements so we can become a more functional, attractive facility. The things that made us stand out are now broken down or need replacing. We have stadium lights that allow people to ride at night after work, but currently we can't afford the bill it takes to run it. We need a few key pieces of equipment that will show that we care for ourselves and our horse owners’ needs. Our horses need to be comfortable in heat and cold, and our clients need to know that their horses are secure and safe. We need to clean up pallets, old jumps, poles, and fence rails that lie around and make us look “junky.” Trips to the dump can be very costly, and renting a construction size dumpster can also be very expensive.
The need for functioning equipment is crucial. We own a tractor, mower, and weedeaters, but all need to be replaced or are in a desperate need of repair. The biggest thing that needs to be fixed is the electrical, so that more parts of the property can have power.
What sounds so simple can be truly overwhelming, when the cost and labor add up so quickly.
For more than 25 years we have dedicated ourselves in running a family friendly custom care facility. We have always welcomed all breeds, all disciplines, all ages and all genders of riders.
What we are blessed with is a beautiful family an amazing community and a property that we have put over 25 years worth of blood, sweat and tears into. The ranch has the potential to be great again. All the things we need are here, we just need help getting them running again. We are older, and while our spirits may be low, we do not give up or give in easily. We have fought through many hardships in our lives. We are fighters, and that is why we have been able to survive for as long as we have, with hard work and tenacity.
All our lives we have been the ones who were able to help those in need, but now when all seems lost, we are the ones in need. Any little bit makes a huge difference, and if it's not possible to donate, please share with friends and family.
