Save Nova Teachers

Nova High School is an alternative high school in Seattle serving 300 students, 70% of whom are part of the LGBTQ+ community. For many of these students, Nova is the only safe place in their lives. Outside of school, many parents and families refuse to accept their students’ identities. LGBTQ+ students have the highest rates of homelessness, the greatest risk of sexual assault, and the highest rates of self-harm and suicide.
Within Seattle Public Schools, Nova offers and prioritizes extensive and fully integrated services and resources for LGBTQ+ students along with LGBTQ+ curriculum as to support and celebrate this student population. Nova is a safe and liberatory space for all students. What happens in the safe space of Nova is that these students who are persecuted by so many outside of school can be kids and scholars.
Due to budget cuts, Seattle Public Schools is taking two teachers from the school. This means that Nova will not have the teachers needed to offer courses required for high school graduation. We need your help because, without these teachers, Nova students could have to move to mainstream schools where they may not feel as safe, supported and protected.
Students have made their voices heard about the way this will impact their education at Nova.

I, Zenovia Wiest, am an alumni of Nova who graduated in 2013 and have stayed involved in the community since graduation. I contacted the administration at NOVA about what was needed to save teachers and this amount will cover those teachers compensation and allow them to return. All money collected through this fundraiser will go directly to NOVA and then directly to the teachers who return. I will be receiving all donations via check and the signing that over to NOVA.
As a Nova alumnus, when I heard about what was happening with teachers in the school district I wanted to do something to help. We are attempting to raise the money to pay the two teachers the salaries they need to keep teaching at Nova.
This gofundme is an effort to help keep this school intact so it can continue the great work it’s doing.

Update: We successfully brought back one teacher for this year and are continuing to raise money to sustain teachers at Nova for next year. All money raised will be given to Nova to use to keep their amazing staff whole!!!
