Save MONA: Plant A Sign Garden

The Museum of Neon Art (MONA)  needs your help to survive Covid19 closures and share our growing collection with the public in a safe and inspiring way.  We are raising funds to build a "Sign Garden", an iconic one-of-a-kind LA County landmark and outdoor exhibition space located in the former parking lot of the Museum.

Starting at just $150 your name will shine as a sponsor in our new exhibition space. Any size donation will help MONA at this critical time, but we have made special incentives to reward levels of giving.

Gardens are a symbol of growth and possibility, places of solace, and community. They are built on care and fueled by light.  In many ways MONA is made of the same stuff. Our nearly 40 year old institution is built on the passion of artists, preservationists, historians and lovers of neon. With each sign saved from the wrecking ball, each student who learns how to bend neon glass in our classes, and each visitor and tour participant who has their eyes opened to the hidden beauty of their built environment, MONA tends to the spark of innovation and possibility.

Our mandated 8 months of closure due to pandemic has challenged us financially, resulting in losses of over 50% of our income. Our skeleton staff has slimmed down operations and expenses to weather the storm. So far we have survived through generosity of our members, donors, foundation support, and government support. However, we only have a few months of funds left. Your donations give us a lifeline and chance to reopen and delight our audiences in a safe way.

The historic signs in MONA's collection spell out stories of mom and pop business, childhood memories, Hollywood dreams, community narratives, and artistic innovation in twinkling lights. They also remind our audience that throughout dark and bright times communities have found a path to shine on, sharing their glow with the world. Thanks for considering supporting MONA at this crucial time. We are so grateful to you!

More about MONA:
The Museum of Neon Art encourages learning, curiosity, and expression through the preservation, collection and interpretation of neon, electric, and kinetic art. At the crossroads of history, art, and science, MONA has exhibited electric and kinetic fine art, and outstanding examples of historic neon signs, for over three decades. The Museum serves Glendale and Southern California communities through semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions, and inclusive on- and off-site programming. The MONA facility in Glendale hosts a classroom on the premises where visitors can watch skilled neon craftspeople fabricating and processing the neon tube and take hands-on classes to learn this fascinating art form.

Throughout its 39 year history, MONA has fostered an awareness of historic neon signage through its LUMENS project with the City of L.A., which restored and relit many signs across the city skyline, and its popular bus tour, the “Neon Cruise.” MONA has witnessed the rise and fall of neon used by the sign industry and the current resurgence of neon used by creative artists and commercial designers today. Throughout its history MONA has sustained and celebrated a community of artists and preserved specialized skills and knowledge in order to carry neon, plasma, kinetic, electric, and glass arts into another generation.
