Pioneer Cemetery-Lake Cicott is a pioneer cemetery located in Cass County, Jefferson Township. It is located on state land and under the care of DNR. The land was taken over by DNR in 2012. At that time, DNR contacted the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology or DHPA inquiring about cleaning the small hilltop cemetery. The were advised to leave it as is. This cemetery has not been cared for since before 1941.
These are pioneers whom fought the land to create farms, mills, aided in the construction and running of the Erie Canal. They built railroads, post offices, churches and houses. One plot is the final resting place of a civil war soldier. On of the ladies resting here was a first settler of Logansport. They all deserve our respect and our care.
An outdoor museum full of history and our founding Fathers/Mothers. I have gained the support of the DNR, DHPA, Governor Holcolm, residents of Lake Cicott, members of Lake Cicott Methodist Church. I am trying to raise funds to pay for a "Cemetery Heritage" sign and post, an actual cemetery sign, clean up of the cemetery (tree removal/trimming, grass seed and straw, construction of steps, stone cleaning and restoration as well as stone location).
This little cemetery has come to mean a great deal to me. I cannot wait to see it cleaned and restored to the original beauty our settlers found in it.
Please help with what you can. If you cannot help monetarily. We could always use more volunteers!
I will be keeping a ledger of funds- when, where and how they were spent. It will be available to be emailed to anyone wanting a copy.
