Save Historic Burke Church

Burke Lutheran Church began in 1851.  It grew out of its first two buildings, then in 1899 the current structure was built. The church is located on the outskirts of Madison, WI. and is surrounded by a cemetery. It is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows.  These windows were given in memory of Knute Reindahl, an internationally known violin maker in 1937.
   To meet the needs of the congregation, and the community it was decided to construct a building that was handicap accessible as well as add additional space. There was no question in anyone's mind that we wanted to save the current sanctuary.  If you were to attend a service at Burke you look up to the figure of Jesus with sunlight pouring though the stained glass window and you see a tear in the corner of his eye.  There is a warmth in this building that is unlike what you find in newer buildings.
  Currently a new education wing has been built and to save the existing historic sanctuary it will be picked up and moved next to the new building and then the two will be joined.
   Funds raised will be used to help cover the cost of this move.  With a building that is 121 years old we have encountered a few unexpected problems that have increased our costs.
Funds are needed now for us to continue this project. 
   Burke Lutheran is a small congregation and this is a big undertaking. We have always been a fiscally responsible group but we are overwhelmed with these additional costs.  We will be forever grateful to those who help us save this historic church.
