Save Harvey Lake

Donation protected
Sweet Harvey Lake near Dorset, ON, Canada has only nine little cottages, the majority of which with families who have been on the lake for over 50 years.

In early July,  Bacher Construction applied to the Ministry of Natural Resources for a 53 ACRE quarry only 170 metres upstream from this pristine lake which violates the  planning bylaws of the Township of Haliburton Highlands. The applicant is relying on an exemption MNRF has from local planning bylaws. However, MNRF has an obligation to respect plocal planning and can and should require compliance.

The families on this pristine lake are thus facing a David & Goliath battle opposing the quarry which could impact the threatened Blandings Turtles and Little Brown Bats onsite, ruin the beautiful wetlands, destroy the serenity of this lake with very loud blasting, pollute the lake with terrible chemicals, pollute the air with sillica and increase traffic of up to 7 18-tonne trucks per hour.

The proponent has stated they want to get this through before the regulations get too tough.

This fight will establish a precedent as to whether the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will require applicants to respect local planning bylaws and has major implications for rural and vacation properties throughout Haliburton County.
