Fuzz Aldrin is quite a girl!
The only survivor of a litter of kittens abandoned in a box on the Vegas Strip in August of 2011, she was nursed to health by a very caring woman in Los Angeles. Because of these traumatic first months, Fuzz has always been tiny, but her love for people is enormous.
At one year of age, she chose two humans to be her full-time, forever people, and her devotion to Phil Leirness and Lily Holleman has been fierce and steadfast.
During the holidays, she stood constant vigil, protecting and soothing Phil after he became bed-ridden with illness. Then, on Christmas, this sweet, little girl stopped eating ... And drinking ... By the time Phil got her to emergency care, her breathing was troubled.
The doctors and nurses at the facility immediately fell in love, dubbing her "little Mama" and broke the sad news: Fuzz had gone into congestive heart failure. The life-expectancy for such a diagnosis is short. However, the doctor was perplexed by one aspect of her vitals that was not consistent with this diagnosis, and so our little fighter was transferred to another emergency care facility where a cardiologist performed an echocardiogram.
This test revealed that although Fuzz does have signs of heart disease (no surprise given her traumatic fight to survive her origins), she is, in fact, NOT at risk for congestive heart failure. The source of her illness lay elsewhere ...
Whether it be pneumonia, or asthma, or some combination thereof, the source of Fuzz Aldrin's illness is in her lungs. Under the careful guidance of her people, the team at ACCESS Speciality Animal Hospital in Culver City attacked all potential causes with every treatment they could conceive, performing every non-invasive test that would provide clues to better treatment, while not creating further trauma with which little Fuzz would have to do battle.
Even after a few days, optimism for Fuzz's prognosis was in short supply.
A discussion was had, preparing for the best way to allow Fuzz to shuffle off her mortal coil.
Her people have been steadfast in their determination, however, to buy Fuzz every opportunity and all the time she needed to heal at her own pace, under her own power ... And finally, her lungs are showing improvements, her breathing is getting better, her dependency on oxygen decreasing, her spirit, attentiveness and feisty attitude on the rebound.
And, oh, the purring is LOUD!
We now believe this story has a happy ending.
It is expected that within the next two to three days she will be able to return home to conclude her convalescence in comfort and in the loving arms of her people.
To date, Fuzz's emergency treatments (oxygen, IV, feeding tube, nebulization, steroids, antibiotics), tests and hospitalization (with around-the-clock compassionate attention and care) have cost approximately $10,000, with a few days of hospitalization and treatment still to go.
