<div>My name is Cathleen Murphy, and I am a teacher in New Jersey. I am asking for your help on behalf of a remarkable nine-year-old boy, Diego Cabrera Gonzalez, and his family, who are facing a deeply urgent and heartbreaking situation. I have had the pleasure of knowing Diego for the past three years, and during this time, his spirit, intelligence and gentle heart have inspired me as an educator and a person.

<div>Diego was born in Ecuador and diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. His condition affects his mobility, speech, and daily comfort. He lives with a foot that turns inward, limited mobility in his arms, and limited control over his mouth, leaving him unable to speak or manage saliva independently. Despite these challenges, Diego is incredibly resilient—he communicates effectively using a specialized device and brings joy and determination into every room he enters.

<div>In December 2023, Diego, his mother Maria, and his two siblings came to the United States seeking safety and the medical care he so desperately needed. Since arriving, Diego’s life has changed in extraordinary ways. He has undergone four life-changing surgeries that have significantly improved his quality of life. He is currently awaiting a fifth surgery, scheduled for May, which will help him walk more independently and gain better use of his hand.

<div>Before coming to the U.S., Diego’s medical needs in Ecuador were severely neglected due to limited resources and access to specialized care. Returning him there would mean losing the critical medical support he needs to survive and thrive.

<div>The family is now facing a terrifying reality. On April 23, Diego and his family must attend an in-person asylum appointment in Newark, New Jersey. Due to prior legal errors made by a consulting service they trusted, their case is now in a critical state. Legal counsel has advised that there is a high likelihood they will be deported without immediate action taken to fix their case.

<div><strong>The family</strong><strong> has secured compassionate, experienced legal representation at a reduced (“low bono”) cost, but the family urgently needs help covering the initial retainer fee and ongoing monthly payments to continue their case.</strong>

<div>If detained, Diego’s health could rapidly decline. Immigration detention centers are not equipped to provide the specialized, consistent medical care that Diego requires. The consequences could be devastating.

Actualmente está esperando una quinta cirugía, programada tentativamente para mayo, que le ayudará a caminar con más independencia y a mejorar el uso de su mano.
