Moto is not just any old hospitality business. This is not a business being driven by ruthless opportunists. This is an ethical business that is committed to driving social and economic change. This is a business that:
- Shouts loudly about wage theft in our industry and commits to pay fair wages and provide good working conditions to our employees
- Supports Australian local growers and producers with our procurement strategies
- Employs, educates and mentors young people to develop the skills they will need to be ethical business participants and leaders in the future with the aim of developing a best in class profit share model for ALL staff in the business: dish-hands to directors
- Advocates for and gives back to disadvantaged members of our community
- Values and fiercely defends diversity and inclusion amongst all our staff, customers and community
Moto has the potential to be a shining beacon for all those who believe in ethical business practices; fair pay, fair tax, profit share, full disclosure and uncompromising corporate citizenship.
As a result of the impact of the Level Crossing Removal Project in Carrum, Café Moto has experienced a devastating loss of income. The State Government refuses any financial compensation, our insurers will not compensate, and so as a last hope we turn to our community for support. These are hard times and we need immediate help.
As a result of continued traffic disruptions outside our venue we have gone from a consistent year on year growth of a 9.7% EBITDA increase to a year on year decrease of 53.95% within one month. For an ethical, honest business this is unsustainable and equates to the figure we are hoping to raise.
Your donation will go towards
1. Securing jobs for our staff.
These same staff who are so devoted to our business and practices that they are planning working bees, refusing payment for quiet shifts, stalling debt collectors, and planning and strategizing about how to attract customers back into the business. In truth, they have provided far more practical help to the business than the authorities we have turned to for help.
2. Paying debt to our suppliers that we have incurred due to this government initiated project.
We have hand picked our suppliers based on them being small, local, ethical businesses. These people have provided us with free goods during this time as "without stock you can't make sales - and if you go down so do we". These are real people with families who are the grass roots of our economy.
We started Moto 4 years ago and have learned a lot along the way. We have made many mistakes! We soon learned that doing things the "honest" way would never make us rich but we also learned that the systemic issues in the hospitality industry were way bigger than us. Moto is an ethical crusade for us. A chance to prove that having integrity can equal success in hospitality. Just because (est) 80% of cafes do the wrong thing, doesn't mean we have to. In 4 years we haven't earned any money from the business, but this is bigger than our individual gain. .
We have great things planned for the coming months
- A partnership with a grass roots Melbournian Brewery to redevelop our bar and beer garden
- A partnership with a local vegetable grower to create our edible beer garden
- A collaboration with a new emerging Melbournian artist to utilise our walls to showcase her art
- A collaboration with a Melbourne bee keeper to establish our own hives to promote bee health and harvest our own organic honey
- A collaboration with an RTO to deliver Certificate IV in hospitality to interested employees on-site
Without financial relief we will not be able to continue trading or to realise any of these great initiatives which will benefit our staff, community and customers.
