A group of dedicated local Byfleet residents are raising funds to save the Victorian fire station in Byfleet and we need your help!
Our aim
The old Fire Station has stood in Byfleet for over 135 years and is one of the village’s last remaining historic buildings. Now a team of local residents and your local Councillor Amanda Boote have come together to try to safeguard this much-loved but neglected location for future generations. We are aiming to raise £300,000 to buy, restore and bring this building back to life for the community. We are asking for £250,000 from Surrey County Council via their Your Fund initiative and we would like to show them we mean business by also raising £50,000 via a crowd funding event. We will also be applying for other community grants and approaching local companies to support us.
History
The Fire Station was built in 1885 by Sir John Whittaker Ellis. The first brigade was manned by volunteers from the local community, and the building served the Byfleet area, latterly as part of Surrey’s fire service, until the early 1960s. The building is a rare example of a Victorian brick-built fire station, is Grade II Listed and within Woking Borough Council’s Byfleet Conservation Area.
What we plan to do
The Byfleet Fire Station Trust has been formed and is fundraising to acquire and restore the building. Once the Building is restored, safe and fit for use, the purpose of the building will be to provide a community hub for all ages and abilities to use for events and activities and encouraging environmental and sustainability initiatives in the community.
THE HUB @ BYFLEET FIRE STATION
This space will hold a range of calendar activities managed by The Byfleet Fire Station Trust. Pop-up activities in the space will include educational and hobby-based workshops such as pop up art galleries, IT repair hubs, community health and advice bureaus, bicycle repair hubs, craft workshops and pop-up craft/vintage markets just to name a few. We will also carry out entertainment evenings such as cinema nights, comedy nights and history exhibitions. A coffee shop will be incorporated into the business plan.
As a Community Hub, we want to tackle the following local issues
Be a place where all members of the community, regardless of gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or any other difference, can work together for pleasure. Learning, while improving self-confidence and mental and physical health, yet having fun along the way.
Improve a sense of social responsibility – a view of society and a heart for ‘giving back’ and helping others.
Provide an opportunity to apply learning to real-life experiences for all ages, all abilities and access for all.
Improve lifelong communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills for all.
Encourage passions and interests that may lead to a career choices or changes and reduce unemployment.
Connect local and lonely residents to others to encourage new friendships.
Encourage older residents to interact with the younger generation to share their wealth of knowledge and traditional craft and heritage skills.
Encourage local volunteer groups, schools, colleges and universities to get involved and seek community engagement throughout the whole process.
