It is with a deep sense of urgency that I pen this letter.  The Piper-Gardner American Legion Post No. 191 is in desperate need of your support.  The foreclosure of our Post is imminent if immediate support is not received in due time.  

Post No. 191 is a valuable American Institution located in the South Melbourne Community, an area that is populated by mostly African Americans.  The Piper-Gardner American Legion Post No. 191 was organized by a small group of African American veterans, returning home from World War II in the late 1940’s at a time when segregation in the south was prominent.  

Over the years this Post have participated in and sponsored many patriotic events such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and 4th July Parades.  Annually, the Post sponsors a scholarship to a deserving student of Brevard County.  In addition, the post provides food baskets to the needy.  Post No. 191 is a strong supporter of Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation. This committee assists veterans in pursuing claims, understanding their rights and obtaining their benefits. Committee members also visit comrades who are sick or disabled and provide comfort to members’ families in illness and bereavement.

Post No. 191 is strong supporter of community service, and youth activities such as Boys State, Boy Scouts, Oratorical Contest, School Award Medals, Police Officer of the Year, Teacher of Year and Fireman of the Year Awards.  In addition, the post support Little League Baseball.

Post No. 191 now find themselves suffering financial distress due to aging members and a severe loss of previously revenue generated activities.  We have exhausted all reasonable means known to us and continue to seek new revenue generating activities.

It would be unacceptable to us and a failure to our community to be forced to turn this establishment over to the banking community.
