I beg that you give this a quick read. A life truly hangs in the balance.
Imagine going to the doctor’s office for a minor abdominal discomfort, expecting to leave with nothing more than advice to 1) increase your fiber intake and 2) drink more water. Instead, you leave puzzled with a prescription for a colonoscopy in hand and absolutely no clue that you will soon be fighting for your life.
"Colorectal Adenocarcinoma" is a term not commonly known unless you’re in the healthcare profession or you are a patient or know a patient suffering from the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men (third in women.)
At the Hufnagel residence in Ellwood City, PA, Lexi (13) and Ben (10) not only can spell it, but they can also give you a quick education on "metastasis" and the different stages of cancer. The subject isn’t part of their curriculum at school. It's because their daddy and my dearest friend, Bill Hufnagel, has it.
If that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Lexi and Ben could tell you how after school one day last week, their mommy, Christina, Bill’s bride of 16 years, and daddy sat them down for a talk. I cannot fathom the strength it took from Bill and Christina to tell their babies, that daddy’s cancer had spread, doubled in size and the doctors said there is nothing else they can do. Their best friend and hero has only months to live.
However, there is still hope.
A Marine Corps friend of mine had faced a similar situation a few years ago. Hope was running thin when he and his wife turned to MD Anderson, in Houston Texas, the #1 rated Cancer Hospital in the country. The best of the best. Together, with amazing doctors, nurses, staff, countless prayers and the generous donations my friend continues to celebrate a cancer-free life.
I truly believe lightning can strike twice. A quick internet search for "MD Anderson" will lead to news articles from just last week showing the first floor submerged in flood water from the recent historic and devastating hurricane. Against all the odds, Bill secured an appointment within minutes of his first call. That's certainly a miracle in itself. Bill and Christina will be headed there on October 4th for at least a week for evaluation, testing, procedures, treatment, etc.
YOUR HELP IS DESPERATELY NEEDED.
While Bill, Christina, Lexi, and Ben are stocked up on courage, confidence, and love, they are very short on funds to cover current and future medical expenses. Our initial goal of $25,000 is a conservative number based on current medical bills, estimated near-term medical expenses, transportation and lodging costs associated with their travel to/from the nation's leading cancer hospital, MD Anderson in Houston, Texas.
Every fiber of my being is telling me Bill is going to make it, but it's going to take a lot of prayers and generosity. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to read this. I will certainly be in your debt forever for helping save my dear friend's life which will make his bus stop dreams a reality.
