We urgently need your help to enable our hospital in Sierra Leone to continue saving lives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has an impact going far beyond those falling ill and will affect large parts of the population by leaving other illnesses untreated due to the strong focus on COVID-19.  Experts estimate that about 2,000 children will die each day worldwide from illnesses not related to COVID-19 because the health systems are overburdened by the pandemic. This is especially true in developing countries where already scarce financial and human resources are redirected to battle the pandemic.

This is the case in Sierra Leone where the government’s support to the Magbenteh Community Hospital has been withdrawn and redirected to combat the COVID-19. This has left the hospital, its staff and its patients in a vulnerable and potentially life-threatening situation.

Many actions are organised in favour of the victims of the virus and as a result donations for our hospital have decreased drastically. This has put the hospital in a critical situation.

100% of the funds raised will support critical services provided by the hospital, such as childbirths, hernia and gyn-operations, tuberculosis, HIV, malaria and typhoid treatment.

Without your help these critical interventions can no longer be provided.

The Magbenteh Community Hospital in Sierra Leone has been in existence for 14 years thanks to its founders, Harald & Karin Pfeiffer, a Swiss couple from Gland who have dedicated their lives to the construction of this hospital. It is located near Makeni in Sierra Leone on the west coast of Africa. The hospital has 100 beds, a building for malnourished children and their mothers, an operating theatre and X-ray facilities.

Sierra Leone has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world and an infant mortality rate that ranks 10th in the world, with 18% of children malnourished. The risk of malaria, typhoid, HIV and other infectious diseases is very high.

WE NEED YOUR HELP !

Your help is essential so that we can continue to treat patients and to save lives.

The Magbenteh Community Hospital quarterly takes care of:

-> More than 430 hospitalized patients, including 140 children and 150 pregnant women.
-> More than 1'000 outpatient consultations, including 380 children under the age of five
-> more than 900 children under the age of five are vaccinated

Donate 20, 50, 100, 1000 Swiss Francs (Euro) or as much as you can. We assure you that 100% of your  donations will go directly to the hospital.

Here are some numbers...

CHF 50            Care for one day
CHF 300         Hernia operation on a child
CHF 500         Drugs and supplies for one day
CHF 1000      Salaries for doctors and nurses for one day

The amounts in this campaign are given in Swiss francs (CHF). ASSL is a registered charity in Switzerland. ASSL is recognised as an association pursuing aims of public utility. Therefore, donations made to Action Swiss-Sierra Leone can be deducted from your income for income tax purposes.
