Sauver une vie menacée par des fatwas abominables

Aimeriez-vous être condamné à mort simplement parce que vous avez quitté la religion qu'on vous a imposé durant votre enfance ? Ou simplement parce que vous avez émis des doutes sur les motifs d'un prophète ? Non, bien sûr, pour un Canadian, être libre-penseur, humaniste séculier, athée ou agnostique ne pose généralement pas de grave problème. Ce n'est malheureusement pas le cas de plusieurs pays où changer de religion, ou n'en avoir aucune, est une crime passible de la peine de mort, soit officiellement, soit plus simplement en fermant les yeux sur les lynchages de soi-disant «blasphémateurs» par des hordes de fanatiques religieux. Les journaux de ces pays font régulièrement état de ces meurtres publics mais les pays occidentaux ferment les yeux sur ces abominations.
Voici un exemple de ce qui attend quelqu'un qui est jugé «blasphémateur» par une foule fanatisée: le 3 décembre 2021, au Pakistan, un ingénieur, directeur d'une usine textile, Priyantha Kumara a été torturé puis brûlé à mort. Ce n’est que le dernier d’une longue série.
En Afghanistan, l'effondrement du gouvernement Afghan a eu, entre autres, pour résultat de laisser libre cours à la chasse aux apostats. Un de ceux-ci a fui au Pakistan avec sa femme. Appelons-les FT (Free Thinker) et ZS.
FT est un jeune homme Afghan particulièrement ouvert sur le monde. Malgré une éducation dans une madrasa, il a littéralement décidé de s'acheter une véritable éducation supérieure. Pour cela il s'est improvisé entrepreneur de travaux publics dans sa province natale et, au bout de quelques années il a accumulé assez d'argent pour entrer dans une université anglaise et obtenir un diplôme en gestion. De retour en Afghanistan, il a eu le malheur d’être dénoncé comme «apostat», ce qui, pour les Islamistes est une forme de «blasphème» et est donc un affront que seul la mort peut laver! Cinq responsables musulmans ont dûment émis non pas une fatwa, mais deux fatwas. Je les ai vues, ainsi que leurs traductions du pashtoun à l’anglais, certifiées par une entreprise anglaise tierce, entreprise habilitée à certifier les traductions de documents officiels.
La première fatwa s’adresse à la famille du blasphémateur pour lui imposer de couper tout lien avec lui et de le déshériter. La seconde s’adresse collectivement à tous les Musulmans et déclare que la sentence coranique de la peine de mort est désormais applicable au malheureux. Inutile de préciser que, depuis, FT et ZS vivent la peur au ventre. L’arrivée des Talibans au pouvoir à l’été 2021 a été l’élément déclencheur de leur fuite au seul pays qui leur était accessible en novembre 2021 : le Pakistan! C’est peut-être moins pire que l’Afghanistan des Talibans mais, comme on l’a vu plus haut, c’est loin d’être le pays rêvé pour une victime de fatwa.
Il faut que FT & ZS sortent du Pakistan aussitôt que possible. FT parle couramment anglais, ZS parle couramment français et ils veulent émigrer dans un pays occidental sûr. Nous sommes la seule organisation humaniste occidentale qui ait répondu à leur appel (les autres, tel Humanist International, sont submergées de demandes provenant de l’Afghanistan : elles considèrent ces dernières comme prioritaires). À l’AHQ nous considérons qu’il est de notre devoir de sauver la vie de FT dont le seul crime est d’avoir émis des doutes sur le Coran. FT et ZS veulent venir au Canada et, depuis six semaines, nos échanges avec FT nous ont convaincu de leur sincérité.
Pour cela il nous faut suffisamment d’argent pour entreprendre les requêtes en immigration, en particulier la procédure rapide en cas de persécution religieuse. Nous saurons alors si le gouvernement fédéral était sincère lorsqu’il a créé cette procédure «rapide» pour les réfugiés persécutés pour motif religieux. D’autre part il nous faudra «parrainer» ce couple pour assurer leur installation au Canada. Le gouvernement demande aux parrains de garantir un an de soutien.
J’ai posé la question à un groupe de nos membres : devons-nous aider ce couple à immigrer au Canada ? La réponse a été bien résumée par l’un d’entre eux : «Si je ne fais rien et qu’il arrive malheur à FT et ZS, je ne sais pas comment je vais pouvoir me regarder dans le miroir, le matin suivant, en me rasant.»

Newspapers in these countries regularly report on these public killings, but Western countries turn a blind eye to these abominations.
Here is an example of what awaits someone who is judged a "blasphemer" by a fanatic mob: on December 3, 2021, in Pakistan, an engineer and textile mill manager, Priyantha Kumara, was tortured and then burned to death. This is only the latest in a long line of cases.
In Afghanistan, the collapse of the Afghan government has resulted, among other things, in a free-for-all for apostates. One of them fled to Pakistan with his wife. Let's call them FT (Free Thinker) and ZS.
FT is a young Afghan man who is particularly open to the world. Despite an education in a madrasa, he literally decided to buy himself a real higher education. To do so, he improvised himself as a public works contractor in his home province and, after a few years, he accumulated enough money to enter an English university and obtain a degree in management. Back in Afghanistan, he had the misfortune to be denounced as an "apostate", which for the Islamists is a form of "blasphemy" and is therefore an affront that only death can wash away! Five Muslim leaders duly issued not one, but two fatwas. I have seen them, and their translations from Pashto to English, certified by a third-party English company, a company authorised to certify translations of official documents.
The first fatwa is addressed to the family of the blasphemer, requiring them to cut all ties with him and disinherit him. The second fatwa was addressed collectively to all Muslims and declared that the Koranic sentence of death was now applicable to the unfortunate man. Needless to say, FT and ZS have lived in fear ever since. The arrival of the Taliban in power in the summer of 2021 was the trigger for their flight to the only country that was accessible to them in November 2021: Pakistan! It may not be as bad as the Taliban's Afghanistan but, as noted above, it is far from being a fatwa victim's dream country.
FT & ZS need to get out of Pakistan as soon as possible. FT is fluent in English, ZS is fluent in French and they want to emigrate to a safe western country. We are the only Western humanist organisation that has responded to their appeal (others, such as Humanist International, are overwhelmed with requests from Afghanistan: they consider these requests as a priority). At AHQ we consider it our duty to save the life of FT whose only crime is to have expressed doubts about the Koran. FT and ZS want to come to Canada and, for the past six weeks, our exchanges with FT have convinced us of their sincerity.
For this we need enough money to start the immigration applications, especially the fast track procedure for religious persecution. We will then know whether the federal government was sincere in creating this "fast track" procedure for refugees persecuted on religious grounds. On the other hand, we will have to "sponsor" this couple to ensure their settlement in Canada. The government is asking sponsors to guarantee one year of support.
I asked a group of our members the question: should we help this couple immigrate to Canada? The answer was well summed up by one of them: "If I do nothing and something happens to FT and ZS, I don't know how I'll be able to look at myself in the mirror the next morning when I shave."
