Sasha's surgery/recovery

On 11/08/2017 our beautiful beloved Sasha girl was scared by a rattle snake that got into our home. In the process of removing the snake Sasha ran out the front door and crossed the busy intersection of 67th Ave and Happy Valley Road around 6:20pm. We looked for Sasha for hours, riding bikes and driving the truck thru the desert, nearby neighborhoods, CCV church parking lot, and construction sites close by with no luck of finding her. I posted on Facebook and Nextdoor right away and got responses from people saying they saw her running east across 67th ave and she appeared to be limping and bleeding but anyone who tried to get her was unsuccessful. She was hit by a truck and two amazing ladies were able to catch her that next morning around 11am.

She was taken to our local vet right away then was transferred to the emergency animal hospital VetMed. Once at the animal hospital they took x-rays and checked for internal organ damage. They discovered that her femur had been completely dislocated and her knee had possible damage. After that much time had passed her ligaments and muscles tightened up and made it impossible for the veterinarian to pop her femur back into place. At that point the only option was orthopedic surgery or euthanasia. The surgeon was able to see Sasha the very next day and she was diagnosed with a left hip luxation, a deranged left stifle, and multiple lacerations and severe bruising to the hind limbs.

Sasha underwent open reduction of the left hip with toggle pin stabilization, as well as deranged stifle repair. The procedure has about an 85-90% success rate. Potential complications include implant failure and re-luxation of the hip, which would require additional surgery. Sasha also had her left stifle (knee) stabilized. Bone anchors and monofilament line were used to reconstruct the medial collateral ligament. Additional sutures and monofilament line were placed to reconstruct the cranial and caudal cruciate ligaments. The medial meniscus was torn and had to be removed.

After 4 days at the animal hospital Sasha was able to finally come home. She is on 5 different medications, given multiple times daily. We have to keep her kennelled with minimal activity for 8-10 weeks. She must be sling walked for a minimum of 6 weeks, along with physical therapy to hopefully regain the use of her left leg.

Sasha is a very special member of our family. We hope to provide her with any therapy she needs for a full recovery. Sasha is super sweet and very close to our 10 year old son, at this time we are asking for donations to help cover the cost of the surgery and recovery. Even the smallest donation is greatly appreciated! We will keep everyone updated on Sasha's journey.
