To Ease a Sick Friend's Burden

If you're like me, someone who gets up each morning thinking about what I'm going to do that day, planning my activities, deciding who I want to "play" with, ranting about the news, figuring out what's for dinner and going about my routine, then you're one of the lucky ones. You don't think about end-of-life issues, the fickleness of good health, the fact that your life might be cut short and how to remain positive and embrace life even when confronted with harsh odds. We don't have to.

My friend, Sara, isn't so fortunate.

For the past four years, Sara (not her real name because she is far too proud to agree to my using it this way) has been fighting the valiant fight against breast cancer. She's done all of the traditional medical recommendations. She's consulted alternative health experts too. And she's found a team of doctors she can trust. In fact, more than anyone I know, Sara has managed her disease with dignity and grace- doing the research, asking the questions and forcing her mind to think hopeful thoughts even when receiving one piece of heartbreaking news after another.

Now, she's at a crossroads. The experimental drug she's been taking is no longer working.  Her body has become toxic from ingesting it. And there is only one other drug on the market that might work.

The problem? Even with Medicare and the best supplemental program money can buy, she can't afford the drug. It would cost her $12,000 a year out-of-pocket--money she just doesn't have since her savings have been depleted by her four-year battle.

I have set up this account to raise money so Sara can try, yet again, to beat or arrest this disease. Our system is unfair. With all the burdens a cancer patient has to deal with, why should they have to worry about going bankrupt too? I would be more than grateful for your donation. No matter how large or small, if together we can raise $12000 then Sara will have enough money to pay for one year of treatment. And she can put her energy into fighting the good fight and not worry about how to pay for it.

I thank you very much for your compassion and your generosity. Every donation is appreciated and will move us closer to our goal.

Yours in gratitude,
Ava
