Kidney Transplant Fund
My sister Sarah Newman has suffered from Kidney Disease since the young age of four. Sarah was able to regain 50% of her kidney function, but has seen a slow decline in her health over the last 20 years.
In January 2017, Sarah's kidney function was deemed to low to function independently and she started peritoneal dialysis. Sarah underwent surgery to implant her dialysis catheter and had taken full responsibility for her own care by doing dialysis at home 4 times a day.
Sarah resides in Charlottetown with her almost 2 year old daughter Jessa. Due to dialysis Sarah has been unable to return to work. Sarah was given a time frame of approximately 5-10 years before receiving a deceased donor transplant, however there was one other option.
Our father Boyd offered to be tested to take part in the Canada wide Paired Exchange Program. This program allows eligible donors to be paired with donor recipients all over Canada. Boyd was entered into the swap in June 2017 with the hopes of finding a match, but no guarantees. One week later Sarah received a call with wonderful news. Boyd was a match for a recipient in Toronto and they had a match for Sarah. A true blessing to our family!!
In October Sarah will travel to Halifax to undergo surgery to receive her new kidney and Boyd will travel to Toronto to give a kidney to an anonymous recipient.
All proceeds from this page will assist with the medical bills, food, accommodation, loss of wages and other related costs to both donor and recipient who will be having surgeries in two different provinces at the same time.
