Dear family and friends,
You all know how awesome my sister Sarah is! You also probably know what a private person she is! Because of that, I want to be super sensitive as I share something very personal with you that happened to her this year. Sarah has given me permission to do this (share her story and set up a fund), but I want to make sure that I convey it in a way that respects her private nature.
This summer, while trail running in the hills near her home, Sarah suffered a hard fall. In true Sarah fashion, she tried to push through her injury. But, in the days and weeks which followed it became apparent that this wasn't just a passing injury like she'd experienced before.
After months of treatments and therapy with little progress, the doctors realized that Sarah had suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI has a wide range of physical and psychological effects, one of them being an inability to heal from physical injuries in a normal period of time. She continually suffers from many symptoms including headaches, nausea, back pain, sleeplessness, mental confusion, fatigue, depression and the list goes on!! One of the most devastating effects of this is that it has interrupted Sarah's ability to pursue her passion for the outdoors and the livelihood from massage therapy. You can only imagine how devastating this must be for her! We want to help her get the treatment she needs so she can return to doing these things again soon!
With the TBI diagnosis, Sarah’s medical team has referred her for treatment at a cutting-edge center for rehabilitation of the brain, CognitiveFx in Provo, Utah. While the center has extensive research and demonstrates positive outcomes working with a wide range of patients, including professional athletes, health insurance will cover little, if any, of the cost. This is where we would love your help! Despite being prepared with an emergency fund, and despite their best planning and preparation for the slings and arrows of life, Sarah and her family aren’t able to do this alone.
Sarah is scheduled to go into treatment on February 5 and must pre-pay for the clinic. In addition, she will have ongoing therapy expenses after the treatment as well as travel, lost wages and medications. Please help us help Sarah by offsetting these costs.
It goes without saying how much Sarah and her family have done for all of us, now we want to help them! Any amount you can contribute will mean so much. I know that Sarah’s private nature is probably uncomfortable with this request, but I know that we all love her so much and would do anything we can to help!
