My dear friend, Sarah Schaleger, has been living with radioactive resistant papillary thyroid cancer for more than 17 years. This is a rare, chronic and progressive disease that cannot be cured. Since her 2001 diagnosis, Sarah has undergone a thyroidectomy and 5 additional surgeries.
This year, Sarah has been experienced a sharp increase in pain in her neck, which has affected her head, jaw, ear, shoulder, and has caused excruciating headaches. She underwent testing and just learned she must receive 7 weeks of external beam radiation therapy. If her cancer is left untreated, anything she eats or drinks will fall directly into her lungs, leading to pneumonia and then death.
Sarah has an amazing doctor whom she's worked with since 2006. She first met Dr. Bryan McIver (endocrinologist, oncologist, neuroscientist and nationally known thyroid cancer specialist) at Mayo Clinic and stayed with him when he moved to become head of endocrinology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa in 2013.
Dr. McIver is confident that radiation treatment can stop the cancer's progression in Sarah's neck and provide her with a good quality of life for about 10 more years.
From September 24 through November 7, Sarah will receive treatment in Florida. She is required to be accompanied by caregivers, as the effects of radiation become increasingly difficult. Friends and family have taken on this critical role. Your contribution will help pay for housing, flights and essential expenses for Sarah and her caregivers throughout the course of her 7 weeks of treatment far from home.
