Sarah Shattuck's Traumatic Brain Injury Fund

Heartbreaking news for all. Sarah and her family’s world has turned upside down. On September 5th, the very week she turned 23 and started medical School at UC San Diego, Sarah was riding her bicycle home from class and got struck by an SUV traveling 45mph. This tragic accident caused several injuries requiring surgery, including a broken pelvis, fractured skull, shoulder, ribs, tailbone and a severe traumatic brain injury. Sarah has been in a coma and in the Intensive Care Unit at Scripps Memorial Hospital in LaJolla since the accident.

Sarah has shown some signs of recovery, so there is hope, but she will have a long road to a full or partial recovery. At this point her Doctors are unsure if she will emerge from her coma state. Therefore, we do not know how long she will be hospitalized. The hope and goal is for continued improvement, stabilization and to move her via ambulance to a Sub-Acute Traumatic Brain Injury Center near her friends and family in the Conejo Valley area and then to later move her to an Acute Rehabilitation Center specifically for traumatic brain injuries.

Sarah has a long and difficult road ahead of her requiring intensive rehabilitation to maximize her healing. Fortunately, she is on her parent’s health Insurance, but the out of pocket expenses for her injuries are still astronomical. Insurance is not covering a large portion of her care and there are a lot of additional expenses adding up.

Sarah knew from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor in order to help others and she spent countless hours in doing so. She recently graduated from UC Berkeley, where she spent three years there volunteering her time at the Suitcase Clinic, a clinic that provides medical needs to the homeless. Sarah passionately advocated and helped the homeless people in northern California. She is an extremely bright, kind and strong willed girl. Her determination has always given her the edge. One of her favorite quotes is: “Never tell me the odds!” which feels so relevant, especially at a time like this. She fought to be the exception and we want her to have all the necessary resources to continue to be able to do so.

A lot of people have been reaching out asking how they can help Sarah. This GoFundMe has been set up for those people who want to help, but please do not feel obligated. It is our hope that your financial contribution will help heal Sarah in her time of need. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated. Please forward this information to spread the word to help support Sarah.
