Sarah Kay's Medical Support

Donation protected
On July 21st 2017, Eatonton, Georgia native and current Indiana resident, Sarah Lines Kay, was diagnosed with actue myeloid luekemia (AML). Sarah, a mom, law student and intern in the Tippecanoe County Prosectuor’s office had to immediately start treatment for the leukemia. She also had to take a leave of absence from Indiana University’s McKinney Law School as well as stop working at the prosecutor’s office.

Since then she has had to enter the hospital numerous times and undergo chemotherapy every 4 to 6 weeks in preparation for a stem cell transplant. During this time she has been unable to work and will be out of work for the forseeable future. Her mother, Susan Lines, has been in Indiana since July 21st to help with Sarah and David’s son, Preston. The family is now faced with growing medical, living, and travel expenses that far exceeds what the Kay family is able to handle.

Sarah was fortunate and blessed to find a donor and the preparations for the stem cell transplant procedure began on December 5th at the Simon Cancer Center at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. What followed was a week of intensive chemotherapy and the transplant of the donor’s stem cells on December 12th, 2017.

Unfortunately, Sarah’s body rejected the donor’s stem cells and Sarah was once again at the Simon Cancer Center preparing for a second transplant. This involved stem cells donated by her brother, Josh.

In July 2018, Sarah spent a month in the hospital at the Simon Cancer Center receiving chemo, radiation, and the stem cells. She is now at home and goes to the cancer center once every six weeks to have check ups with her hematologist. Her numbers are looking great so far and we feel so thankful and blessed by the good news.

On November 6th, 2018, Sarah was told by her hematologist that no cancer cells were detected in her bone marrow and that her bone marrow cells were 100% Josh's cells! Now, we wait to see when Sarah will get stop taking her immunosuppressants. When she does, her body will need to maintain the healthy cells.

Our families are very grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers as we navigate this road to Sarah’s complete recovery.
