<div><strong>Mission: Two-Pronged Approach</strong>
</div>
<div>Our first mission is to conduct participatory film-making workshops led by eminent filmmakers. These workshops empower vulnerable communities on the frontlines of the climate emergency to share their stories authentically using the medium of film. Our second mission involves co-creating a feature film with these communities, inspired by their pursuit of climate justice and indigenous rights.

<div>Our journey begins in Amazon, Brazil, where the Amazon rainforest is facing an unprecedented drought, reshaping landscapes and threatening the unique phenomenon of 'fallen lands.' The historic drought sparks wildfires, endangers wildlife, and isolates remote communities. Rivers, the highways of the Amazon, hit record-low levels.

<div>Our focus is on the Afro-Amazonian community known as the Quilombolas of Saracura, who are African fugitives from the

<div>Trans Atlantic slave trade with a great history of resilience and black pride. Today, they are facing grave threats from both the changing climate and systemic discrimination.

<div><strong>The Significance of Quilombos </strong>
</div>
<div>Approximately forty percent of the 12 million Africans brought to the Americas to be enslaved, landed in Brazil in the late 16th century. Many enslaved Afro-Brazilians escaped bondage and made Amazon their home which led to the creation of Quilombos. In 1988, regional and national organizations in Brazil formed an alliance for a long and hard fight against racial discrimination and this played an important role in the grassroots political action that resulted in introduction of Article 68 in the Brazilian Constitution granting Quilombola land rights.

<li>Even with 56% of Brazilians identifying as Black, systemic racism remains a documented and shocking reality.
</li>
<li>Quilmbolas occupy only a small percentage in the Afro-Brazilian census; yet the impacts of discrimination and environmental racism are stark.
</li>
<li>Poverty rate of around 75 percent prevail among quilombolas, compared to 25.4 percent in the general population.
</li>
<li>Only 219 of the 2,926 Quilombos have land titles and without land titles they do not have access to social benefits.Threats are also looming from illegal loggers and gold miners encroaching on quilombola land.

<div>"Quilombo" signifies self-sustaining communities, embodying resistance and survival, inspiring anti-racism and black consciousness movements in Brazil. This project amplifies silenced indigenous black voices in the Amazon, fostering positive change for a more inclusive and sustainable society.

<div>We need to raise <strong>CAD 30,000 immediately</strong> to pay back the pending payments incurred for the Proof Of Concept (POC) shoot. The remaining money will be used for post-production of the POC.

<div>Along with the great success stories, we have had our fair share of challenges too - limited funds, cultural and language barriers, harshest weather and other challenging environmental conditions. This has been a roller coaster ride with a lot of ups and downs. A seca histórica provoca incêndios florestais, coloca em risco a vida selvagem e isola comunidades remotas. Os rios, as estradas da Amazônia, atingiram níveis recordes de baixa.

Muitos afro-brasileiros escravizados escaparam da escravidão e fizeram da Amazônia seu lar, o que levou à criação dos Quilombos. Em 1988, organizações regionais e nacionais no Brasil formaram uma aliança para uma longa e árdua luta contra a discriminação racial, o que desempenhou um papel importante na ação política de base que resultou na introdução do artigo 68 na Constituição brasileira, concedendo direitos à terra aos quilombolas.
