¡Música Maestro! You can support talented young string instrumentalists in Mexico by donating to SAOAXACA, an exciting new international chamber music festival in Oaxaca, Mexico!
SAOAXACA is the first tuition-free chamber music festival exclusively for string instrumentalist (violin, viola and cello) in Oaxaca, founded by the Amatista Quartet from the University of Michigan and partnered with the Fine Arts School (Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca, UABJO) and the Fonoteca Juan León Mariscal of Centro Cultural San Pablo. The SAOAXACA vision is to provide excellent chamber music opportunities to underserved string instrumentalists in Mexico and increase the study and promotion of Hispanic and Latin American composers.
The $1000 will cover the travel costs for 2 faculty members, providing multiple lessons and coachings for up to 15 students during the two-week festival.
SAOAXACA is dedicated to creating a bridge between musicians from the United States and Mexico, providing excellent pedagogical opportunities to young professionals by bringing classical music to underserved Mexican communities. Although Oaxaca is overflowing with astounding artistic talent and cultural richness, string education is scarce due to the lack of educational and economic opportunities. SAOAXACA is an invaluable experience for all of its participants due to its commitment toward the artistic growth of the dedicated, disciplined and passionate students who have long desired a high quality musical experience such as this. SAOAXACA is also dedicated to the study and promotion of chamber music works by Latin American and Hispanic composers.
This festival was founded by the Amatista Quartet (Ann Arbor - MI), which was one of the recipients of the Performing Arts EXCELerator Grants founded by The Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Career Empowerment & Leadership (EXCEL) Lab at the School of Music, Theater, and Dance (SMTD), Fall 2018. Thanks to SMTD at the University of Michigan and SAOAXACA partners in Oaxaca, this festival had its inaugural year summer of 2019.
This coming year, we are happy to partner with the Fine Arts School (Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca, UABJO) and the Fonoteca Juan León Mariscal of Centro Cultural San Pablo again! We are also applying to the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA), a federal grant for arts and culture in Mexico.
Donations above $50.00 will receive a handwritten letter and picture of one of SA’s students.
Donations above $100.00 will receive photocopy of handwritten letter by a SAOAXACA student, a picture and a link of the final festival performance.
