" Track & Field - Cabo Verde "

We created this fundraising page in an effort to help support the local Track and Field team in my hometown of Santa Maria, Sal, Cabo Verde.

Being that the entire island of Sal has very few and limited in sports programs, the Santa Maria's youth Track and Field athletics team was founded back in 2012. In the realm of sports, track & field is luckily one of the lower cost sports one can enjoy. Low costs do make it a bit easier to manage – but it doesn’t come without a cost. The kids on the team regularly have to travel to other towns in order access a track where they can practice. There are uniforms to be purchased, training equipment they need, etc.

As you may already know, I have reaped the benefits of this sport and have been able to achieve so much because of what I’ve learned through Track & Field. There are approximately 100 members on the team. As with any sport, the right equipment can be critical to performance. Due to high poverty rates and other factors within the island, athletic programs don't often receive the level of support they need. That is what drove us to start this campaign, to help garner financial support for the team. So they may be able continue training and competing.

Why?
Athletics (Track & Field) provides an important base for building core values during early youth ages, but can also produce a positive impact in the island of Sal and the town of Santa Maria. We believe that through the introduction of athletics at an early age, kids will be able to benefit from the following:

- Adopting a more positive attitude and thinking
- Dealing with pressure
- Developing teamwork skills
- Building character
- Teaching discipline
- Improving self-confidence

Basic Needs of The Team:
- Training Supplies: Cones, hurdles, chalk, measuring tapes, stop watches
- Competition Equipment: Team uniform and warm ups, training/racing shoes, spikes
- Travel Expenses: Bus rental for competition

When/How
This July, Rossy and I will be going on a trip to Cabo Verde (at our own expense) to visit family and friends. But also thought this would be a great time to promote the sport of Athletics in the island and provide monetary support to the team. We will meet with the team board, coaches and athletes.

100% of the funds from this page will be donated to the team in the form of a check.
