Hallo, mein Name ist Clifford Boateng und ich bin selbstständiger IT-Berater. Der Beginn meiner beruflichen Karriere liegt in Deutschland, wo ich die Chance hatte, Ausbildung und Studium zu absolvieren, sowie erfolgreich zu arbeiten.
Geboren und bis zu meinem 15. Lebensjahr aufgewachsen bin ich jedoch in Berekum, Ghana. Dorthin zurück zog es mich auch unmittelbar nach meinem Hochschulabschluss als Diplom-Informatiker. Wieder angekommen in meiner Heimat, brach es mir das Herz zu sehen, dass die meisten Jugendlichen bereit waren die Sahara zu durchqueren, um nach Europa zu gelangen. Sie alle suchten eine ähnliche Chance wie ich. In Ghana sahen sie keine Perspektive.
Diese vermeintliche Ausweglosigkeit schockierte mich und ließ mich darüber nachdenken, etwas gegen die drohende Abwanderung über die gefährliche Sahararoute zu unternehmen. Meine Frau Sabine unterstütze mich bei meinen Überlegungen und so schufen wir im Jahr 2014 gemeinsam die erste Idee von Sankofa Community Education. Wir wollten einen Ort mit einer entsprechenden Infrastruktur gründen, an dem Gleichgesinnte zusammenkommen, um ihr Wissen über das Leben und die Informatik auszutauschen. Gleichzeitig sollte dieser Ort auch Kunst, Kultur und Musik in der breiten Bevölkerung fördern.
Wir begriffen schnell, dass wir uns ganz speziell auch den Jüngsten zuwenden mussten, um die Fernsucht in den Köpfen der Gesellschaft zu bekämpfen, die dachten, man könne es nur im Westen erfolgreich zu etwas bringen. So gründeten wir den Sankofa-Kindergarten und die Sankofa-Grundschule in Nanasuano, einem kleinen Dorf in der Nähe von Berekum.
Heute, im Jahr 2021, besuchen 300 Schüler die Sankofa-Grundschule, davon 128 Mädchen. Im vergangenen Jahr wurde die Junior High School eingeführt. In zwei Jahren werden die Schüler dieser Stufe ihre Abschlussprüfung ablegen, um in die Senior High School zu wechseln, welche ihnen später den Zugang zur Universität ermöglichen wird.
Aus diesem Grund ist es nun notwendiger denn je, die Schule an das Breitband- oder Glasfaserinternet anzuschließen, ein neues IT-Labor und Co-Working-Space einzurichten, sowie die IT-Infrastruktur generell zu verbessern. Auf diesem Weg können wir die Schule mit der Welt verbinden, die Qualität des Unterrichts steigern (in Richtung UN-Charta, Agenda 2030 SDG4) und den Schüler:innen helfen, sich mit Gleichaltrigen in den Städten und weltweit zu vernetzen.
Die Sankofa Community Education bietet den Menschen in der Bono-Region eine Chance und Hoffnung, Arbeitsplätze sowie neue Lebensperspektiven und leistet einen Beitrag, die drohende Abwanderung zu stoppen.

Hello, my name is Clifford Boateng, and I am an information technology (IT) consultant. To become what I am today, I had the opportunity to further my education in Germany: studied and currently living and working there.
After graduating as a computer scientist, as a returned expert, the first trip I took was to return to Ghana (West Africa) to visit the town, Berekum and rural communities where I was born and raised until I turned 15.
It broke my heart when I was confronted with the fact that most of the youth were willing to cross the Sahara to Europe, without thinking of the consequences thereof.
In 2014, my wife Sabine and I decided to do something about the threat of migration through the Sahara in these communities. The idea of Sankofa Community Education was born. The idea was to create an infrastructure that would bring people from all places together to share ideas and knowledge about life and ICT, and to promote art, music, and culture among the population.
To change the mentality of society that thinks “you can only make it in the West”, we decided to tailor our attention on children, who are the backbone of the Region and Ghana at large, which I hail from and so Sankofa Kindergarten and Sankofa Primary School one (1) was established in Nanasuano, a small village in the Bono region near Berekum.
Keeping in mind that IT can enable people to work from anywhere in the world, provided there is a good Internet connection and access. Hence, software development will play a pivotal role in our initiative to harness talents who have passion to develop their ICT skills.
Today, in 2021, 300 students attend the school of which 128 are girls, and last year the Junior High School was introduced. In two years, Junior high school students will have to take their final exams for senior high school, which will then give them access to the university.
It has now become more necessary than ever to finally set up our IT lab and co-working space, improve the IT infrastructure and connect the school to broadband or fiber optic internet. This will connect the school to the world, improve the quality of schooling (towards the United Nations Charter, 2030 agenda on SDG goal 4), and enable students to compete with their peers in cities and elsewhere.
We believe in sustainability and self-sufficiency and hope that the opportunity this initiative offers to the people of the region will bring hope, jobs, and a new perspective of life to stop the threat of emigration. We are asking our network for support in our initiative to give the school and the students the chance that was given to me some time ago.
