My Mom, my beautiful, kind, loving, self-sacrificing Mom is facing a monumental medical crisis. End of October 2016 she was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma. She has been placed on a liver transplant list at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Hospital. She needs your help to fight this ugly disease.
Cholangiocarcinoma
is a cancer of the liver bile ducts. In my Mom's case the cancer formed at the conjunction of the two biliary ducts that come from each of the two lobs of the liver. The two ducts join into a bigger duct that then drains into the intestine. The cancer formed right at this Y that is formed by these ducts.
The traditional response is radiation and chemo which she has done and currently undergoing. It has been a year during which she has lost weight drastically, gone in and out of the emergency room countless times, undergone numerous procedures, and taken literally pounds of medication.
The chemotherapy is brutal. Her current MELD score is 29.
The MELD score is how people that need a transplant are being triaged and placed on waiting lists since there are not enough donors and waaay too many sick people. The MELD score is also based on regions of the United States.
The max MELD score is 40. For a liver transplant in zone 5 where we live she would have to be in the high 30s to be able to be considered for a transplant. This MELD score goes up every 3 months with 1, 2 or 3 points based on how the board decides.
We are looking at many more months of waiting and going through chemotherapy and doing tests and scans to keep an eye on the cancer in hopes that it does not spread.
Throughout this Mom is in good spirits. When she is not bedridden because of the chemo she even manages to smile and when she does she brightens my day.
How can you help?
My Mom needs your good wishes, your encouragement, your donations, your "Hello's", and for you to share her story with as many of your friends as possible. She has many expenses to cover, including her share of the costs of her multiple hospitalizations over the past year.
At this point, it is impossible to anticipate all of the costs Mom will face as she continues her battle with Cancer. According to the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) , the estimated U.S. average in 2011 of billed charges per liver transplant is in excess of half of million dollars.
A single GoFundMe campaign cannot provide all of the resources Mom will need; however, this campaign CAN provide the resources she needs to pay the medical bills and look at alternative treatments. I hope you will find it in your heart to help her.
