Sandy Kautz Medical Expenses
As many of you know, Sandy was diagnosed with Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) last July after receiving some abnormal blood counts during her regular blood donation. These abnormal values lead to a bone marrow biopsy that confirmed her diagnosis of CMML. She began treatment right away in August with a low dose outpatient chemotherapy in hopes to eventually receive an allogeneic stem cell transplant (stem cells from a donor). She responded remarkably to this treatment, and the workup for the stem cell transplant began. This entailed testing all her siblings with hopes of finding a donor match. Unfortunately, none were a match. This lead to a worldwide database search of donors via 'Be the Match' where two matches were found and she received a stem cell transplant April 30th. Recovery has been a long process but Sandy is taking it like a champ!
Unfortunately, due to daily doctors visits, hospitalization and many medications, expenses are starting to add up. Many have asked how to help but due to COVID-19, help had to be minimal even in regards to family as any little virus or cold can be detrimental to Sandy’s health and recovery. Gary and Sandy have enough to worry about as it is and expenses should not be another one. Any little bit helps as it could mean parking downtown for the day is paid for. This woman has helped many throughout her life and has never asked for anything in return. Even though some days she may feel she is in this fight alone due to minimal interactions and contact, she is not. We are all in this together and she has a community standing behind her.
