A letter from Sandra Roberts -
Dear friends and family,
I'm writing to you in the hopes you can help me in a very difficult situation. Some of you may know that I have had a very challenging year, and my health has taken a downward spiral. My mother and husband passed this year within just weeks of each other and it has taken an emotional, financial and physical toll on my family, and especially myself. Over the past several years I have noticed a decline in my health but more specifically, loss of coordination and strength in my arms and legs. I have seen several doctors and the outcome is that I will need extensive spinal surgery to replace vertebrae in my neck and back to restore function in my legs and hands. At the moment I am completely wheelchair bound and require help to do even the most menial and necessary hygienic tasks. I cannot walk on my own or even hold a pencil. It is quite difficult to do anything without help, and there is no way I can function or even go to work in this state of decline.I have been employed by the Bahamas government for 27 years and desperately want to finish my 30 years of service to receive my pension for living expenses, but cannot do that without this very expensive surgery.
For a break down of what the cost of surgery and recovery will be please see the photo attached. I realize this is an enormous amount of money and have spoken with the doctors and National Insurance and it is estimated that I will need approximately half of this to have the surgery, which is about $43,700.00I have contacted The National Insurance Board, the Bahamas Public Service Union and Social Services, and have been told that without me raising this initial payment, nothing can be done. The Bahamas Government has graciously agreed to hold my job at the Post Office until January of next year, (2018) but at that time I must return to work or risk losing 27 years of pension and any sort of financial income to live off of for the rest of my life.I am desperate for your help. If you can find it in your heart to assist in any way, anything you can do is very much appreciated.
