San Miguel Robotics Challenge Trip

Donation protected
San Miguel's ThunderCats Robotics Team Consists of 6 amazing scholars who work hard to set the example of dedication, creativity, and great teamwork. They represent the City of South Gate and all of South East Los Angeles. This team was assembled last September to compete in LAUSD's local district east VEX IQ Competition. These team members were all new to robotics. They had a rough start in the first tournament meet, but that guided them to be better by working harder, smarter, and to really come together as a team. By the end of the second meet, they were in first place. They stayed in first place throughout the rest of the tournament and earned the Overall Top Team award. This allowed them to compete at the California VEX IQ Tournament Championship. There, the ThunderCats finished in the top ten. This gave them entry into the World VEX IQ Tournament Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.
Throughout this journey, these students have continued to excel in all school academics, while having to create a STEM project, learn autonomous robotics skills using coding, and build the most effective robot to complete set tasks. They met everyday before school and during lunch. With guidance from their robotics coach, Mr. Gomez (who was also new to robotics), they have made their entire community proud. They hope this awesome learning experience can continue.

In order for their journey to continue, they need funds to make it to the final robotics tournament. As challenging as robotics seemed to them at first, coming up with funds is now their greatest obstacle. The City of South Gate has a median household income of $41,000 with a poverty rate of over 20%. At San Miguel, most students participate in the Free Federal Meal Program. This expense is simply not something they can afford.

This learning experience may come once in a lifetime. It will take them to uncharted territory for a total of 5 days. They will spend the first day traveling, followed by 3 days of competitions, then another day traveling back. Their trip is expected to cost $12,000. Here is a breakdown of the costs.

$975 Competition Registration Fee (Past Due)

$4,900 Airfare for 6 students and 2 chaperones

$3,000 Hotel accommodations for 6 students and 2 chaperones

$2,700 Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners for 6 students and 2 chaperones

$ 425 Entry fee for the End of Tournament Team Event or 6 students and 2 chaperones (Past Due)

They are already behind on the registration fee and end of tournament event fee.

Travel starts April 28 and they hope they can book everything as soon as possible.

These students are extremely enthusiastic and are so deserving of this trip. Without your support, these students will not be able to take part in this incredible educational experience.

Thank you for taking the time to read their story.
