Sammy Mills Medical Bills

Donation protected
Hard to believe it is almost 1 year since this happened. I will be hosting a special event at my home in Leander on April 26th to help with the ongoing medical bills and necessary orthotics after almost 2 dozen surgeries that Sammy has endured.   He is now learning to walk again.  The orthotics he needs in his shoes are not covered by insurance and run about $2500 a year.  More details to come.  In the meantime, feel free to share this page.

One Friday evening in April, Sammy was headed home from work.  Looking forward to the weekend and some extra time at home with his parents before he was scheduled to leave for the Air Force in a few weeks.  He stopped at HEB in Leander, Texas for a quick break  from the heat and some cold water to quench his thirst.   He had the opportunity to say hello to some friends at one his favorite  places, Game Stop before getting back on his motorcyle to head home.  He safely made it out to the stop light before turning left onto 183.  Then not even a 1/4 mile up the road another vehicle pulls out across traffic while exiting left out of a transit station.  Unfortunately, that driver misjudged their ability to cross safely.  Sammy was not able to stop in time and instead his body landed on the windshield and then bounced off onto the pavement.  This photo is of him in ICU.  In a matter of 24 hours he underwent 4 surgeries, has had more after that and will probably have a minimum of 4 more surgeries later in life. The other driver only had liability insurance of $30,000.  After several weeks in ICU, Sammy's hospital bill was over $700,000.  He has since been moved from ICU into inpatient rehab.  He even celebrated his 21st birthday in the hospital. His hospital stay is nearing 45 days and will continue until doctor's feel confident that he can safely exit his parent's home in case of an emergency.  His mother no longer has a job. She did what any mother would do in the situation ...she stayed by his bedside. Sammy's position at his work will need to be filled soon leaving the family with only the father's income and no insurance unless they can come up with money to pay for COBRA premiums.  Donations will be used to pay for medical bills and necessary renovations to make Sammy's parents' home wheelchair accessible.  Want to help, but don't have extra cash?  You may also donate blood at any Blood and Tissue Center  in the state or in the U.S. as long as you state it is on behalf of on Samuel Mills at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.
