In mid July (while he was already home recuperating from a work accident), Sammy experienced a crushing headache that was identified at Falmouth Hospital as a stroke. He was rushed to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston where he was diagnosed with a rare condition called an AVM ("arteriovenous malformation"). You can read more about this condition here. Here is more information about his talented brain surgeon Dr. Rose Du of Brigham & Womens and Harvard Medical School.
Sammy has since had several surgeries to successfully correct this malformation. Dr. Du told Sammy that he is in better shape than most faced with this rare disease because of his years of healthy eating and fitness. Sammy is now recuperating at a local rehabilitation facility. He is working with a team of physical therapists, and he is hopeful to be back on his feet in a few months.
In the meantime, Sammy needs our help with his rent and bills. Once he is out of the rehabilitation hospital, he will also need to catch up on medical bills. Sammy has health insurance, but there will still be some bills that are not covered. Sammy also supports his six year old daughter, which is difficult to do when he is in the hospital and unable to work.
Please consider a gift to help out in this special situation today. As things begin to quiet down at the end of summer, we take stock, reflect on our year-round community and consider how lucky we are to work together. Sammy is an exemplary member of this fabric of Cape Cod, a hard working and committed person with lots of good friends. Please join me in helping him in this time of real need.
