In Loving Memory of Sammie Hood

Donation protected
In the blink of an eye, life changed forever for the Hood family last week when their 3-year-old beautiful daughter, Samantha Lee Hood (Sammie), caught the flu virus (Influenza B).   Mark and Sabrina are like any parents - diligent, worried, proactive, and they absolutely live for the smiles on their daughters' faces.   Despite having the flu shot, despite Sabrina taking her in to the doctor twice that week, despite receiving tamiflu, Sabrina put Sammie to bed with a slight fever and some advil on Tuesday, February 27th but early that morning it was clear something was wrong.   They were rushed by ambulance and then medivac to the Children's National Hospital in DC.

Every parent's worst nightmare played out slowly over the next several days as they clung to the hope Sammie would wake up and come back to us, but the virus caused fatal encephalitis.

Sammie was surrounded by her loving, extended family on Saturday, March 3rd at Children's National Hospital when they said goodbye.

Sabrina and Mark now face a new nightmare and adjustment to their new reality.  In the midst of their grief, they are planning a funeral for their beloved Sammie and caring for big sister Emma, their 6 year old daughter.  They have a wide network of friends; a large and close-knit, loving family; and extremely supportive employers.   They feel so fortunate to have such a supportive "village" during this difficult time. Yet, friends and friends-of-friends and strangers are all asking how they can help.

As they focus on putting one foot in front of the other, Mark and Sabrina's closest friends and siblings have decided to put together this page to help them with financial unknowns.   All funds raised will help offset medical bills and funeral costs.   Any remaining money will be donated to Children's National Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to honor the outstanding and compassionate care Sammie and their family received.

The entire Hood and Thomas families are grateful for everyone's outpouring of support.  We watch as Sabrina and Mark read your messages of support and sadness, as well as all of your comments on pictures and your personal memories of Sammie.
