Helping Sami Winters on her journey to walk again

Donation protected
On November 20th, life for this family has for ever been changed.  10 year old Samantha woke up like she does every day and her mom took her to the dentist to have her teeth cleaned.  In the 45 minutes she sat in the chair, her leg started feeling funny and she was unable to get out of the chair.  Her mom rushed her to the ER where Sami was becoming more and more paralyzed.  Within in 2 hours, she was paralyzed from the belly button down.  It was determined that she had something serious going on, and was transferred to Childrens hospital in Oakland by ambulance. After hours and hours of testing, and being put into the ICU, Sami was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis.  She started IVIG treatments right away and then it was a wait and see process.  Sami had an IV and feeding tube put into place, and a few days later had a port put into her neck when it was determined that she would need more aggressive treatment and started blood Plasmapheresis treatments.  Sami has had a revised diagnosis of AFM: Acute Flaccid Myelitis.  She is still paralyzed from the belly down but is starting to get the ability to move a toe and most recently move her right leg voluntarily.  With this diagnosis, it is unsure what Sami's full outcome will be, as everyone's body recovers differently, (best case she regains full use, worse case is she doesn't recover use)    Sami will have a hard, long road to recovery, but she is one amazing little girl and says that she will walk again. There is a chance that Sami will be able to come home in about 1 to 2 months.  For now, the guess is that she will be coming home in a wheelchair.  Sami is sticking to her faith and says that she will walk out of the hospital.  Tisha and Sam have been taking turns living at the hospital and they are all very much looking forward to coming home and the whole family being together again. I am reaching out to see if we can help this family.  Sami will require Physical Therapy 5 days a week in order to continue working on her recovery and to start walking again.  The hospital has told her family that her insurance will cover PT 1 day a week for a set amount of visits.  This is just not enough if Sami is to regain the use of her legs and hands.  The family will do whatever it takes to get her what she needs medically but it could be a great financial hit that they will endure.  We have reached out to a few facilities to get her the physical therapy that we will need when she comes home. One other concern is the Winters family live in a very old house, that is non ADA compliant and at a very minimum will have to make some drastic changes to their bathroom ( doorway widened, toilet moved so she can get a wheel chair in the bathroom and then be able to reach the shower, and really should have a shower installed) and a few doorways in the house.  In the meantime Tisha and her family will figure out a way like they always do and will most likely lift Sami out of her wheelchair and carry her through the doorway until they can make things more comfortable for her.  If their is anyone in the community familiar with and willing to help with this work, we will gladly take your assistance when the time comes!  The whole extended family thanks you for reading this, please share with everyone and if you are able to help financially, they would really appreciate it!  Please keep the prayers coming!!
