Sam Leonard Curmi Road to Recovery

On Monday, 1st January 2018, our loyal, loved, and hard-working son Sam (father to Summer, partner to Bek, son to Lyn) was in a tragic accident. It caused severe damage to his skull, head, and face, with burns to 40% of his face, arms and legs. It is a miracle that Sam is still alive and here with us. To look at him now, you wouldn’t believe the extent of his injuries. He is currently in the trauma unit, facing ongoing surgery, in Alfred Hospital and is in a serious condition.
We've been told that he faces a long road ahead of months in hospital for his recovery. Over the next few weeks, he is going to be fighting incredibly hard just to get through the many risks involved with such horrific injuries. He has had, and continues to be undergoing, many surgeries and skin grafts as steps on his road to recovery.

As a compassionate, witty, loving man, that we all love so much, Sam always lives life to the fullest. He never holds back from hard work or having fun.

Sam is currently in a serious condition. He has just come out of his third major surgery, where 15 doctors spent over seven hours working on reconstructing his skull and forehead, draining the fluid from his brain, placing plates and rods to his skull and forehead, where the bones have totally shattered. When his forehead shattered, fragments of bone lodged in his brain and all through his left eye, leaving no bone to protect his brain which is currently bruised and swollen. Therefore, the doctors do not yet know the extent of the damage to his eye.

At the moment, Sam has an extensive list of things he must not do or it could cause major risks to his health. For example, a simple sneeze or sipping through a straw could set him back.

His left eyeball has been stitched up to his eyelids as he has nothing holding it in.  After one of the first surgeries, the doctors were ready to remove his left eyeball and told us that there was a high chance that Sam would be permanently left with one eye. However, after so many of our family and friends praying, the eye was miraculously saved and he is waiting to see if he will regain his sight again.

Thank you for your continuous prayers and support. Currently he is in a stable condition, but he cannot move or be transferred to a hospital closer to home yet.

Many of you may not know that his amazing mother, Lyn, not long ago was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to have a lumpectomy, which involved the removal cancer from her breast, to give her a better chance of survival. Lyn has been going through some strong chemotherapy treatment and now radiation. The family have been through a lot in the last 12 months and have never cried out for any help, even when she had to give up her work to go through her own trauma.

Everyone who knows our family will know that we are going to be there every step of the way for Sam. However, in order to do that, we are going to need to accept support from all of our family and friends. Sam is going to need full-time care for many months, requiring some of us to have time off work for an extended amount of time.

If you know Sam and Bek, you will be well aware that they are the kind of people who would never ask for help or money, as they are a very hard-working couple, who have recently purchased their own home. Also, their 5-year-old daughter Summer commences school this year. We are not ones to ask for help either. However, we know we can’t do this alone. Our biggest concern, aside from Sam’s health and survival, is the financial strain he and Bek will be battling. 

Currently, Sam’s mother Lyn and his partner Bek have been living in a motel so they can be by his side because they live two and a half hours away from the hospital. Both ladies have ceased work, which means no income for both families.

Any financial support that can be offered will be gratefully accepted as we have found out that Sam has no insurance to cover the ambulance that took him to the Cobram hospital followed by an air ambulance helicopter that transported him from Cobram hospital to the Alfred hospital. Also, Sam will need rehab for a while and a new set of bottom and top teeth as he has lost all bar his two back teeth. There are also the day-to-day expenses to be covered such as bills, mortgage, food, along with other repayments.

We know we can do this, because that is what we do best. We are a strong and resilient family and will always be there for each other. We thank you in advance for the many ways in which you will be there for us and for the privacy you will offer Sam and our family as we endure this journey. We will do our best to keep you informed on Sam’s progress with updates on this page.  All donations will go to a new bank account we've set up, which only our family have access to. The funds are only to assist Sam and Bek during this trying time.
