Strong Like Sam Sykes: Cancer Fund

DIAGNOSIS

Sweet, eight-month-old Samuel was headed for a day at the beach when his parents noticed a slight protrusion in his abdomen area.  They decided to take him to the doctor to ensure he was okay.  Little did they know, Sam’s day of playing in the sun and sand would be put on hold indefinitely.

Unfortunately, the abnormality turned out to be a softball-sized tumor originating from his left kidney.  Sam was heartbreakingly diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms cancer.  Nodules were also found in his lungs, which they currently believe to be the Wilms cancer spreading beyond the kidney.  The original tumor attached itself to the spleen and large intestine, putting both organs at risk and they will need to be closely monitored throughout Sam's treatment.

TREATMENT

Samuel recently underwent a successful surgery to remove his left kidney which had been compromised by the cancerous tumor. He is now recovering in the hospital with his mom and dad. It is estimated that he will need both chemotherapy treatment and radiation to ensure the entire tumor and diseased cells are eliminated.

Sam's appendix was also removed and a port was placed into his chest. Oxycodone, morphine, and Tylenol are administered regularly to help his tiny body cope with the pain.  We hope that it's working.

The next steps of his treatment will include three different types of chemotherapy drugs as well as radiation.  He may have a long road ahead of him, but he's been strong and brave.

COSTS

Sam's mother Jillian is an exceptionally talented engineer but she has to take ample time away from her job to be with her baby boy as he goes through his cancer treatments.  Brian has also needed to be away from work during this difficult time. Additionally, the costs surrounding cancer are astronomical, even with good insurance.  Below, are just a few things a donation would help cover.

  - Surgery
  - Chemotherapy
  - Radiation
  - Pain Management
  - Recovery and Therapy
  - Imaging
  - Genetic Testing
  - Microarray Testing
  - Sequencing
  - Gas
  - Food
  - Time away from work
  - ... and so much more ....

Sam’s mother had been told she would likely never have children due to her own medical ailments. But somehow Sam was born. He is her miracle. Please help keep her miracle baby alive.

With two loving and devoted parents, and a dog that is more like a brother, Sam has a wonderful life ahead of him.  But he needs help getting through this cancer crisis.

Join his fight.
