*Update* 4/25/2018

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to say that we have met our fundraising goal! We have collected a total of $55,347.14 for the Captain Sam Schultz Memorial Award. I am pausing this GoFundMe account for the foreseeable future.

Penn State has officially granted and established the award and will sustainably present a $2,500 gift and memorial plaque to each years recipient, starting this Fall at the Marine Corps Ball.

Additional (tax-deductible) contributions can be given at any time (meaning, today, tomorrow or next year) using this link:

Thank you to everyone who supported this effort and helped us establish something that will forever keep Captain Sam Schultz’s memory alive!

This week, I will be transferring the $46,719.66 raised (after the 2.9% taken from GoFundMe) to my personal account and immediately writing a personal check for that amount to the www.giveto.psu.edu/CaptSchultz fund.

My name is Captain PJ Burns and I’m writing on behalf of one of my best friends, Captain Sam Schultz (USMC), who recently died on April 3rd 2018 while flying his CH-53 Super Stallion Helicopter during a training mission in Southern California.

All those who knew this great American Hero are left wondering what we can do to somehow honor him, console his family or, maybe selfishly, ease some of our own pain.

It is critically important to honor our fallen in a tangible way that makes people remember them, even if that only means just a few moments every year. This tragedy is made all the worse if people forget Sam and his love for Marine aviation.

A large number of outstanding individuals have expressed interest in creating an annual memorial award for Sam that properly honors him and preserves his memory. It is no small task to do this and many efforts to establish similar goals often fail.

We are required to raise a minimum of $50,000 in order to be considered for a scholarship fund honoring our fallen brother.

The idea behind the scholarship is to award an undetermined amount of money each year to a Navy or Marine Option Midshipman who best demonstrated Sam’s work ethic and selfless personality throughout their time at Penn State.

Like Sam, the scholarship would be presented to a Senior in the Penn State Naval ROTC program who was forced to earn a scholarship after starting the program without one.

If multiple individuals hold this title in a senior class, than the Penn State NROTC Staff will choose a Navy or Marine Option Midshipman that has demonstrated consistent hard work in their classes, volunteered in the community and exhibited outstanding leadership within the unit. These three characteristics best capture the type of individual Captain Sam Schultz was and he deserves to be remembered in this positive way.

Please help us create this Scholarship Fund in Sam’s name by donating, so together we will always remember a true American Hero.
