Salvemos el riñón de Ma. Emilia

Hello! My name is Maria Emilia and I just turned 5 years old. I have a beautiful family, my parents and two wonderful brothers with whom I used to enjoy going to the beach.

Since I was 4 months old, my life began to change. I became very sick with continuous severe urinary tract infections and anemia. My parents were desperate not knowing why this was happening to me.  Just almost two years later, they found the cause of my frequent infections. A congenital abnormality on my left kidney was diagnosed. There were 2 ureters instead of 1 and they were very narrow, impeding the normal flow of the urine to the bladder.

This was just the beginning of a long journey through hospitals and a lot of different diagnostic tests that did not allow me to have a regular childhood. On September 2014, I had a surgery to try to fix my problem. The intervention seemed to be successful and I became free of infections for a while. I was happy again enjoying activities with my brothers and friends that I could not do in the past. A year later, my nightmare started again. I had to be taken to the Emergency Department for a severe urinary tract infection. The conduct connecting my kidney to the bladder was very narrow again. Infections became continuous and now the functionality of my kidneys started to decrease. On January and March of the present year, the urinary infections spread throughout my body, putting my life in danger. Even this year, I was not able to start the school year with my friends because of the risk of  infection. Again, I travelled to and from the hospitals. After many painful procedures, doctors in my country (Ecuador), decided to perform a new surgery in August and the plan is to proceed with two more in November and January. After all these surgeries are done, I will still need to have an special operation in the United States for reimplantation of the urinary canal. My parents have run out of funds and can neither afford to pay for these surgeries nor the care required for recovery. My mother has organized many fund raising activities but it is not enough. Please help her and my father in their effort as parents to see me healthy and help me to have a regular life other children might take for granted.




Hola, me llamo Maria Emilia y acabo de cumplir 5 años de edad. Tengo una hermosa familia, mis padres y dos hermanos con los que me encantaba disfrutar de la playa.

Desde que tenía 4 meses de edad, mi vida empezó a cambiar. Estuve muy enferma en continuas ocasiones donde presentaba cuadros severos de infecciones a las vías urinarias y anemia. Mis padres se desesperaban al no saber porqué me ocurría esto. Recién a los 2 años de edad me pudieron encontrar la causa de mis continuas infecciones, una anomalía congénita en mi riñón y uréter izquierdo que impedían el paso de la orina hacia la vejiga.

Esto fue solo el inicio de un largo recorrido por hospitales y muchos exámenes que no me permitían tener una infancia como otros niños. En Septiembre del 2014, fui sometida a una cirugía para tratar de solucionar mi problema. La intervención en principio fue un éxito, las infecciones habían cesado y mi vida estaba volviendo a la normalidad. Pasó 1 año cuando empezó nuevamente mi pesadilla, tuve que ser internada en el hospital nuevamente por una infección en las vías urinarias. El conducto que conectaba mi riñon con mi vejiga estaba nuevamente estrecho, impidiendo el flujo de orina. Las infecciones fueron empeorando y la función de mis riñones disminuyendo. En Enero y Marzo de este año tuve infecciones muy severas que se me diseminaron por todo el cuerpo (sepsis). Estuve muy grave en el hospital por varias semanas y mi vida se puso en peligro. Incluso este año no pude ingresar a la escuela como mis demás compañeros. Desde ahí he pasado en los hospitales y los doctores en mi país (Ecuador) decidieron someterme a una nueva cirugía en Agosto. El plan es realizarme otra intervención quirúrgica en Noviembre y una más dos meses después. Una vez que termine estos procedimientos en mi país, mi doctor me recomienda realizarme una cirugía especial en Estados Unidos donde me reimplantarían el canal urinario. Mis padres han batallado por

mi todos estos años y no cuentan con los recursos necesarios para este tratamiento ni para el posterior cuidado de mi salud. Ellos han organizado muchas actividades para recaudar fondos pero ya no nos es suficiente. Por favor ayúdenlos en su esfuerzo por verme saludable, y a mi por recuperar una vida normal, la cual muchas veces damos por garantizada.
