<div>La majestuosa Selva Maya, que se extiende por México, Guatemala y Belice, es uno de los ecosistemas tropicales más grandes de América. Este vasto paraíso verde no solo alberga una biodiversidad extraordinaria, sino que también es esencial para la regulación del clima, la captación de carbono y la conservación de fuentes de agua dulce. Su importancia cultural y ecológica es incalculable, siendo hogar de pueblos originarios que conviven en armonía con ella desde tiempos ancestrales.

<div>Entre sus ramas densas y cielos abiertos, entre las copas de sus árboles y sus ríos, la Selva Maya resguarda algunas de las aves rapaces más impresionantes y emblemáticas del continente:

<div>Sin embargo cada día, miles de hectáreas son devoradas por las motosierras, convertidas en tierras para uso agrícola y una ganadería que cada vez abarca más extensión de selva. La deforestación avanza como un incendio imparable, dejando a su paso muerte, desolación y silencio.

<div>El cambio climático seca sus fuentes de vida; los incendios forestales arrasan con su corazón verde; la caza furtiva y el tráfico ilegal de especies arrancan de sus entrañas a los guardianes alados que alguna vez dominaron sus cielos y que hoy ven sus hogares desaparecer.

<div>En Dimensión Natural recientemente reportamos el registro de una especie considerada extirpada en la Selva Maya: el Águila Harpía, el águila más poderosa del Planeta.

<div>Esta águila es el depredador tope de las selvas del Neotrópico y ciertamente es una de las aves más raras. Habían pasado más de 12 años desde el último registro documentado de la especie en el país. Este importante registro logrado en colaboración activa con monitores comunitarios es una noticia esperanzadora y un llamado para poder realizar acciones que permitan conservar esta y otras rapaces neotropicales de gran importancia.

<div>Nuestra meta principal es conservar este grupo de especies mediante el trabajo de monitoreo científico en conjunto con las comunidades de la Selva Maya y mediante la sensibilización de la sociedad a través de la producción de documentos videográficos que narran la importancia de estas especies, su belleza y nuestros esfuerzos por conservarlas. Este trabajo lo realizaremos mediante una serie de expediciones prospectivas adentrándonos en las zonas más remotas de la selva con especial interés por encontrar y documentar el primer nido de Águila Harpía en México, sin duda toda una hazaña pero su logro marcará un parteaguas en la generación de conocimiento para salvar esta magnífica especie en México.
