About the Project:
I will be painting a 62-foot mural on the exterior wall of SPUD Fish & Chips in Kirkland to raise awareness for salmon sustainability in Juanita Creek and other North Lake Washington Creeks.

"A mural with a purpose" - raising awareness for local salmon

The Location: SPUD Fish & Chips
SPUD Fish & Chips has served seafood from the same iconic corner in Kirkland since 1969 - across from Juanita Beach Park and Juanita Creek. The owners of SPUD love the plan for a mural to support salmon, and it's the perfect wall to use to brighten up the community and raise awareness for salmon!

Bringing the Vision to Life:
The project is a true “mural with a purpose”. I’m partnering with the UW's North Lake Washington SalmonWatchers to help bring this mural to life.

I will be working with Seattle-based nonprofit Urban ArtWorks to host a Community Paint Day for this mural in Spring 2022, and we'll be involving over 60 community volunteers to help paint my design onto the wall. I will be designing and facilitating the project entirely volunteer. Our goal with the Community Paint Day is to involve as many people as possible in the physical creation of the mural, and for each person to leave with a greater appreciation for salmon and an urge to support local streams.

Connecting the Mural to Salmon Awareness:
The mural will depict red and green Kokanee salmon in Juanita Creek, a bright vivid illustration to remind people of the wildlife that we share our local streams with.

Next to the mural we will also include a plaque talking about the importance of salmon, the history of Juanita Creek, and how individuals can get involved to support local creeks - to further raise awareness for salmon.

A Further Impact:
We're planning on making merchandise from the mural design as postcards, T-shirts, mugs, prints, and more with 100% of proceeds going to North Lake Washington SalmonWatchers program, to give back to help support our cause of salmon.

Fundraising Goals for the Mural:
I will be designing and painting the mural entirely volunteer, but we have several costs of supplies and materials. I am provided a base stipend of $300 for the mural, but we are hoping to raise an additional $2,000 for the mural.
  • Permit with City of Kirkland - $200
  • Exterior Acrylic Paint - $850
  • Anti-Graffiti and UV Protectant Clear-Coating - $450
  • Paintbrushes and Roller Heads - $150
  • Plaque to Inform About Juanita Creek and Salmon - $350
  • Total Cost Estimate & Fundraising Goal: $2,000
