Please Help SallysWheels Protect African Rhinos

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Sally Parkinson, and I am going to South Africa for a reconnaissance trip early April to organize a vehicle and to prepare for my upcoming quest, detailed below, which I hope to begin in September/October. I want to raise some funds to donate now so that Conservation organizations can see that I’m serious about helping.

In conjunction with this fundraising page, I have organized a Pádel Tenis Tournament at Club Pádel Albalá, where I live in Spain, on 6th April. All funds raised through that event and from this GoFundMe page by 8th April, will go to Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary and I would so appreciate your help. CareForWild

My Quest. Having spent 7 weeks volunteering for conservation in Botswana and South Africa last year, at 65 years young I have decided to take myself off in a converted-for-living, 4x4 Land Rover (yet to be named – ideas here please!!) and travel through sub-Saharan Africa to raise awareness and funds for dedicated projects by bona fide conservation organizations to re-generate habitat, rehabilitate, protect, and re-wild endangered species, plus provide education and opportunities to local communities.

I didn’t appreciate quite how bad the situation is in Africa. I was horrified to see how baby rhinos were left next to their mutilated mothers, who had had their horns severed and been left to die slowly so as not to alert anyone. Helpless babies left alone and standing no chance of survival without the swift action of anti-poaching units and conservationists such as Care for Wild.

Trade in elephant tusks still goes on and the trend of poisoning lions and hacking them up for their bones is rising dramatically. The knock-on effect for scavengers like vultures and hyenas and others that feed on these unfortunate lions is devastating and these animals have essential roles in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Vultures are key to preventing the incubation and spread of fatal diseases such as rabies, anthrax and the plague – Yes!

The effect of the illegal trade in wild animals as well as loss of habitat and climate change has had a devastating effect on the ability of many African species to survive and on our own well being.

It is not always easy to know where best to direct funds as many projects, whilst admirable, have not been properly thought through and therefore have a limited chance of success. Luckily, I made some incredibly good friends across various professions all working within conservation, who have given me their time and expertise to identify where to place funds to best effect.

Care for Wild (please check out their social media) was set up in 2012 by Founder and CEO Petronel Nieuwoudt. From humble beginnings, with just a couple of run-down buildings, it has grown, through sheer hard work and determination and with the help of volunteers and donations, into a world-class facility.

Petronel and her dedicated team are not only rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting injured and orphaned rhinos with the aim of finally re-wilding them, but also providing numerous opportunities to the local community and addressing a wide range of socio-economic challenges.

Little Arthur stayed by the body of his mother until rangers tranquilized him and took him to Care for Wild where he was treated and began his journey to recovery with his new family.

The protection of these and other endangered species extends beyond their preservation by safeguarding ecosystems, uplifting communities, and giving hope for a brighter future for generations to come.

Thank you for your time in reading my page, and I am grateful for any contribution you may make. Any and all contributions will make a difference to the likes of Arthur.

All the best
Sally
