I'm going to Africa! Senegal to be precise, to work on Mercy Ships as a medical laboratory scientist.
Mercy Ships is the biggest non government hospital ship in the world, which docks at Ports in Africa, staying for 10 months to provide much needes surgeries to those who often don't have access to even the most basic health care which we take for granted. Not only to they provide these life changing surgeries, but are involved in training and mentoring local health professionals and improving health care infrastructure. What makes this organisation more amazing is that it is almost entirely run by volunteers and funded by donations from around the world.
I'm hoping to raise some funds to help support my journey, and also to make a donation to the charity organisation. This is not a paid postion, I have to pay my way, including airfairs and monthly crew fees of US$700.
I will be volunteering for 10 weeks, during my time on the ship I will be working as a scientist in the laboratory, processing blood and other biological specimens to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients, as well as giving life saving blood transfusions.
