Saints M&M Refugee Support

Donation protected
Since this past April we at Saints Matthew & Mark have been assisting the Dorcas International Institute of RI with settling refugee families in RI.  We have been working with two families, Sinait and her four children and Azeb and her one child over the past few months.  We supply assistance with rent but more than that we’ve developed relationships with these families.  Once a week a couple of us will give Sinait a ride to We Share Hope in Riverside where she is receiving free groceries for a year.  There have also been trips for the kids to places like Roger Williams Zoo and the beach.

This summer we were introduced to Jamilo, who is pictured above, and after learning her story decided that though we were stretched already working with Sinait and Azeb and their families we had to do whatever we could for Jamilo.  In 1991 she arrived in a refugee camp in Kenya after fleeing her farm in Somalia after her husband was killed by a rebel militia.  On the way to the camp one of her daughters starved to death, another child died later.  Jamilo lost her sight due to hunger and malnutrition.  After twenty seven years in this Kenyan refugee camp Jamilo, her daughter and seven grandchildren were supposed to come to the US.  For an unknown reasons their cases were separated and Jamilo was sent ahead alone.

She is currently living with a much younger Somali woman form another part of the country, Aamina.  Aamina works very part time at the Providence Journal and will soon lose her assistance as a recently settled refugee making it imperative that she find full time work soon.

One day in August Aamina was late coming home and Jamilo began weeping, thinking she had died.  Everything in this country is unfamiliar to her, and she cannot see or speak the language.  She has had nothing but hardship and loss in her life.

We have committed to doing whatever we can for her, including working with Senator Reed’s office to find a way to expedite her family’s arrival in the US and assisting with rent for her and Aamina.

Anything you are able to offer will help us to continue supporting these three families as they try to make a start in RI after years of hardship and loss.  Donations can be made on here or sent directly to Saints Matthew and Mark, 5 Chapel Rd., Barrington, RI 02806, with Refugee support listed in the memo line.  All donations are tax-deductible.

Thank you for your generosity.
