Sail Fail

In 2017, we built, and sold our house in Canada (we are Canadian)  to buy a sailboat and pursue a lifelong dream of sailing.  We succeeded , but one month into our journey, my husband's health deteriorated (we were in the USA at the time and were sent to an American hospital by ambulance- imagine the cost!).  We were forced to return to Canada for health care. We subsequently made several journeys back and forth from the USA to Canada and back. We have travel insurance, but discovered (after the fact) that it does not cover pre-existing conditions, resulting in little or no help for transportation or hospital stays.

Now you probably would ask why we didn't just stay in Canada. First, we thought the condition was corrected, and second our only home is the boat! We had nowhere to stay in Canada. So, we continued on day by day making our way down the inter-coastal waterway (ICW) by motor hoping each day would reward us with good health. Not so, the condition returned, and returned with a vegenance, necessitating flights back and forth between countries and hospitals. 

We are finally going back to Canada for the summer  (2018) and to work and to try to recover from this failed attempt at living on a boat, and sailing. We hope that we can return next year, but who knows. All I can say is, a journey is something else.. at times a real journey is the most unexpected journey.
