Mission Statement: Sagewood Sanctuary provides safe shelter for homeless beings, without barriers, costs or judgement.
Who is served?
Central Oregon is facing an increasing problem with homelessness. The current shelters and programs in the area are able to serve many of the homeless, but there remains a certain number of the homeless who are not able to use these services. There continues to be a large number of unsheltered people in our community. Sagewood Sanctuary is working to create a “low-barrier” shelter, one where people are not required to be sober or to participate in faith services in order to use the facility. However, Sagewood Sanctuary will not allow drug or alcohol use in the shelter and will not tolerate violence, theft or property damage.
Our Vision
A more permanent solution to serving the unsheltered homeless is now needed. Sagewood Sanctuary envisions a three pronged approach to meeting the needs of this population.
1. A year-round managed homeless camp with supervision, sanitary facilities and outreach services.
2. Little cabins to be adopted by churches or businesses and placed on empty lots or parking lots along with sanitary facilities (port-a-pottys). People in these cabins will receive outreach services and supervision.
3. Emergency Warming Shelter for when the weather is cold. The need for this service will decrease as more permanent solutions are created.
This requires a commitment from the citizens of Central Oregon to solving the homeless problem; a commitment to the idea that everyone deserves to have a safe place to be sheltered, to be free from harassment as they sleep and be free from violence. No one should have to sleep on the streets. We can do better as a community and the community benefits from the homeless having a safe and supported place to be.
History
Sagewood Sanctuary was created in 2017 and is a 5013c non-profit organization. During the winter of 2017-18 they created an emergency warming shelter which was housed at Pfeifer Treatment Center in Bend, OR. They were able to serve 20 people on nights when the temperature went below 32 degree and were able to be open on 21 nights. Larry Kogovsek, the president of the board of Sagewood, was the one who initiated the concept of creating a “low-barrier” shelter to serve Central Oregon. He partnered with Sally Pfeifer which then made it possible to create the emergency shelter in 2017-18. Sally Pfeifer is director of Sagewood Sanctuary as well as owner of Pfeifer Treatment Centers.
