As we enter 2021, I will be continuing my treatment for a very aggressive form of metastatic breast cancer--HER2 triple positive--which has entered my lymphatic system. The treatment gives me an 88% chance and is urgent to stop it from spreading to to other places in my body. I will have to meet another annual deductible and out of pocket expense of $9,000.
My wonderful and generous rural community raised my deductible in 2020, and I was able to meet the rest of the out-of-pocket maximum from savings and through two grants for which I applied. I have already been told there will be less grant monies this year because of the pandemic.
Insurance has covered in excess of half a million dollars of my medical bills. So far I have undergone port surgery, harsh chemo, breast lumpectomy and lymph nodectomy surgeries, 6 weeks of daily radiation, and am currently back in a very targeted kind of chemo that costs $21,000 every three weeks. I will be in debt for both my deductible and out-of-pocket max the very first treatment I have in January.
The good news is so far the cancer has been responding well, my cancer markers are down from 29 to 7.2, my scars are healing, and I am tolerating the targeted chemo pretty well. Even my hair is growing back!
I know it is Christmas time, many people (including myself) have lost loved ones to the pandemic, and many folks have lost income, if not jobs or homes. My heart is with you.
