Safety Resource Officer - Waterford Union HS

Waterford Union High School is not able to have a much needed Safety Resource Officer (SRO) given the defeat of School Referendum (SD-6083) in April 2020. The Village of Waterford had released temporary funding for an SRO in 2019-2020 school year. The referendum was defeated 3,179 (No) to 3,159 (Yes). Only a difference of 20 votes.

The referendum was for $95,000 for the next school year so this fund is to help raise those funds. Hopefully the referendum can again be put forth to the voters soon and would be passed.

A total of 6,338 voters participated, but I assume that those that did not favor the resolution due to the increased taxes. For each voter that would mean an increase of about $15.00 per year or $30.00 per year fo a household of 2. That does not take into account the total number that would be assessed for taxes in the community, only those voting.

The WUHS is able to accept these funds, even if only partial. The partial funding would be used for an SRO for anticipated needs.

While it is understandable that the need for an SRO is abhorrent to many, it is unfortunately a fact of life today. I don't think anyone in the community really wants to be in a position to be thinking, "... if only those 20 voters had voted the other way, we could have prevented this tragedy."

Please help protect our young adults. Any help is appreciated no matter how small
