Hi, I’m Toby, I’m a nurse in Allentown.
I’m asking you to donate $20 so we can put up a ‘Safe Staffing Saves Lives’ billboard next to key legislators’ districts, on a busy highway that lots of patients travel. If we raise $2k by Feb 16th, we can put it up for all of March.
We’re in a patient care crisis. I've been a nurse for four years, but every conversation I have with nurses shows that this is an issue. Nearly every nurse in PA is saying that with more patients and sicker patients, and less nurses and ancillary staff, they have never seen short-staffing as bad as it is now.
We know that every additional patient per nurse increases a patient’s risk of death by 7%. Many nurses in Allentown are now 2, 3 or even 4 patients over a safe ratio. You do the math.
It doesn’t have to be this way. As a nurse, my priority is patients (not profits). We need safe staffing ratio laws like nurses in California have. In 2018, 90% of legislators in PA are up for re-election. We nurses are the biggest, most trusted group in healthcare (1/50 people in PA is a nurse) and this year, legislators who want to keep their jobs don’t get to ignore us.
If we raise less than $3k, we’ll buy Facebook ads with the same message, or put the money towards billboards in other parts of PA. If we raise more than $3k, we’ll buy two billboards!
Let’s let patients and their families know that unsafe staffing is dangerous, and let’s make sure legislators see us doing it. Add that to the petition that thousands of nurses are signing , and we can make 2018 the year that legislators just don’t get to ignore nurses anymore.
